You pay LA taxes to the dealer. When you come back to get ur tag they will calculate whether or not you paid enough. You will have to register it in LA.

You will have to register with LA and pay LA taxes.

It doesn't matter where you buy, it matters where you live.

False.

You are going to get hit with a double registration fee (assuming you drive the car from TX to LA). You'll have to register the car in TX and then again in LA.

I've bought 2 vehicles in Texas while living in LA. I never had to do this.

Don't think so. I never received a TX plate when I bought mine.

As long as you have the title and bill of sale, if the title does not have a spot for sale price and notary signature, you are good to register in LA. You do not have to register in Texas. If you have a notary in TX notarize the transaction you shouldn't need anything else. If a Louisiana Notary signs it, you will need a copy of previous owners driver's license to show proof of residence for previous owner. You pay taxes, registration and tag fees just like you bought it in LA. If you are buying from a dealer, they should take care of all of it. The instructions above is only for buying from individual.

Uh No.

I just bought my 4runner in Florida. I paid my Louisiana taxes to the dealer and their title company shipped me my tag 6 weeks later. You tell them what parish you live in and they handle the rest.

Definitely false. I'm a dealer and can confirm that you will only pay LA sales tax. Get the dealer to do it for you and you'll be fine, if you're financing with them they have to do it anyway.

Do not pay taxes to the dealer.

Pay taxes when you register in LA.

Not when I buy out of state, they don't.

I've been working a dealer all day for $500. I damn sure ain't gonna trust an out of state dealer to pay the correct sales tax.

Why not pay them to the dealer? It is illegal for the dealer to keep any extra money collected for sales tax. Also the doc fee is the same whether they handle sales tax or the customer does.

I just prefer to handle it myself.

When I do out of state deals, I keep 'em simple.

No trades, no financing, just tell me where you need to be.
