Well I can say I don't "fear the fish."

I have bought 17 vehicles in Texas in the last decade. The sale price is always at least 10% cheaper which makes it worthwhile. I have bought all from dealers and all have been new. I pay them the tax, title and license and they pay the tax, register the vehicle in Louisiana only and 30 days later I receive a plate.

It really is that easy. If buying from an individual do like above as far as notarizing and getting a bill of sale then register in LA and pay the sales tax here yourself.

In no way, shape or form are you double taxed or do you register in both states.

The fish is a moron.

Bump. I'm about to buy a used car in Texas and found this thread through Google. Anyone know if the quote below is accurate?

quote:

As long as you have the title and bill of sale, if the title does not have a spot for sale price and notary signature, you are good to register in LA. You do not have to register in Texas. If you have a notary in TX notarize the transaction you shouldn't need anything else. If a Louisiana Notary signs it, you will need a copy of previous owners driver's license to show proof of residence for previous owner. You pay taxes, registration and tag fees just like you bought it in LA. If you are buying from a dealer, they should take care of all of it. The instructions above is only for buying from individual.

I bought my last two new vehicles in Texas. Dealer gave me a temporary tag and sent all paper work to the Louisiana DMV. I paid only La tax, title, and license. Saved me thousands.

False, you pay taxes based on where you live and register based on where you live. You’re such a fricking idiot you don’t even realize it’s virtually impossible to do what you’re suggesting. You need something in TX to be able to register it in TX. I’ll let you sort out what that may be.

Any Louisiana resident buying a titled vehicle out of state must have a notarized bill of sale prepared in the jurisdiction in which you purchase said vehicle.

Toyota dealer in Houston handled everything. Even sent me a refund check for some excess fees he had collected.

You will absolutely only pay the taxes in the state that you register regardless of where you buy it and the dealer will handle everything. I did this shopping the entire country for the exact vehicle I wanted with the exact options and price and with the lowest miles. I found it in Salt Lake City while I was living in Lafayette at the time. I made the arrangement for purchase and grabbed a flight out there to pick it up and drive back and made a fun trip out of it on the way back seeing Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, stops in southern Colorado and New Mexico. Hit a few spots on the old Route 66 and even stopped to see the aliens in Roswell, New Mexico before heading home. Oh and I actually owned property in S. Carolina at the time so I registered there where at the time it was a flat $300 on any vehicle purchase, but you paid taxes annually to renew the tag. Regardless, the process is easy and you only pay where you reside or register.

Nope.

I’ve bought 2 cars in texas and registered them in LA. You pay taxes where you live.

Bought multiple

They'll bring you vehicle to you for about $250 if you want.

You give them your zip and they'll do all the taxes and roll into your payment. They'll file for your registration and plate and it will be sent to you house.

You sign their paperwork and hand them a check for the amount you specified at your kitchen table.

They drive off.

Had my last two cars (used ) delivered to the house and signed at my table.

Super easy

I dont know if I got screwed but when I bought my truck in Texas it was the same as if I bought it in Louisiana. There were no Texas fees or anything like that that I'm aware of. The dealer set everything up and a Louisiana plate showed up in the mail a couple of weeks later.

That’s bullshite.

I live in GA and bought a car in AL. The AL dealer collected the GA taxes I owed and I registered the car in GA. Never paid anything tax wise to the state of AL.

Bought 2 new cars in Texas. Sales tax based on your home address. Dealer sent paperwork to DMV in LA. Just make sure the TX dealer sends it to the correct LA DMV location. Dealer sent it to a LA DMV that did not handle registrations. so it got sent back to dealer TWICE! I was past due by the time I figured out where my paperwork was and got hit with late fees when I was finally able to register it
