re: Busted/Frozen Pipe Check In

I had two faucets freeze last night despite being covered so today I added some spray foam to my covers to insulate them more.
Once full I carved out a spot for the faucets to fid and drilled out the hole for the rubber pull string. Not sure why they don't come with more insulation in them to start with.

Yea that's great until it rains then water penetrates and gets the rag wet which freezes it then that frozen rag helps freeze your faucet faster

I’m on a 3 day window of no rain. I prepare accordingly

To be fair, ice can insulate. So reply we want to insulate what we don’t want to break. Sometimes even water or ice can do that.

I live in Nola and my office is in Hammond. Gonna be under 32 for a day or so.
Office is new build on slab. About 8 years old. Got heater on and a few sinks running.
Think I’m safe?

I got one spigot that froze up so far even though it was covered. It's on an exterior wall of my garage which is uninsulated.
Heated it up with a lighter, got water flowing. Wrapped it up more and put a light on the PEX in the attic.
Wish me luck.

"Pier and beam" means the house isn't sitting on a concrete slab. There's a hardwood foundation sitting on cinder block pilings underneath the house instead, creating a crawlspace. If you bang on a hard floor the sound is somewhat hollow.
This is an older and more labor-intensive technology than the concrete slab. The advantages are accessibility of pipe, conduit, HVAC hardware, etc. down in the crawlspace and a natural ability to deal with elevation differences and subsidence. Some people also say a slab house is hard on your feet and back and I agree, to a point.

Frick. Went under the beach house to look. One dripping shower was frozen, cleared that, Then I saw a small stream of iceywater in the ceiling above the golf cart parking area where there should be no water. No idea what this portends, but it ain't gonna be good.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to drip both hot and cold at every sink and shower equally
Washed my hands in my master bathroom earlier and forgot to turn the hot side back on to drip with the cold side, the hot water hose under the sink was frozen within 2 hours.
This is in a slab house with the plumbing for the bathrooms (both on the opposite end of the house from the water heater) in the attic.
It's also very important to leave those sink cabinets open so the homes heat can keep that space warm

This is what makes me nervous
It was 0 here overnight Thursday night and very cold all yesterday. I'm dripping everything and doing basically everything I should be doing with a slab house and everything is doing well so far but frick me it's been cold and all my outside faucets just have the regular hose covers on them. Nothing inside them to help insulate. Pretty hard to believe that alone will keep them from freezing as cold as it is for this long but at this point I don't really want to take them off to add insulating material then lose heat
To be clear I didn't drip my outside faucets, maybe I should have but frick me there's like 9 of them between my house and shop (don't ask)

Water pressure was dropping last night in our neighborhood, but everything else seems okay at home.
Some guy on the OT said opening cabinets is like throwing salt over your left shoulder.

Sorry bro, coming up on 30 hours sub 20 degrees here. My pex pipe in the attic that feeds my fridge was frozen by yesterday morning. My master bedroom hot water is froze, but I have hot going to all showers and tubs and other faucets. Slab house

Woke up this morning to my hot water faucets not turning on. I assume the tankless is frozen since it’s outside the house. I regularly take cold showers, so this isn’t that big of an issue for me but my wife is going to lose it.
