I upgraded to Johnston and Murphy when I first got out of college. Loyal to them for about 3 years until I got my first pair of Allen Edmonds. I now have 3 pairs and will never buy anything else.

If you want an American shoe, this is your best option. Or Allen Edmonds for a more value-oriented shoe. Johnston & Murphy is not remotely in the same league as those two.

You'll need to move up a price point to get an English/Italian shoe of comparable quality. Crockett & Jones is a good starting point.

Bass weejuns. I have the burgundy and black. Comfortable as hell.

But, the people I do business with are generally older and generally more traditional so I consider business casual more business than casual.

Crockett, John Lobb, and St. Crispens are all out of my league. But those John Lobb monk straps...

I think Alden's are more comfortable than Allen Edmonds and work the extra $$$ quality wise. But you can't find them everywhere like Allen Edmonds. And all of their lasts fit differently, so sizing can be iffy when ordering them.
