Easy response it to tell kid to unplug.
No, you make them unplug. Take the phone, block social media sites on the computer, give them a job (and pay them) so they have something else to focus on and work with them on how things will get better.
In the case of this particular child though, the family truly needs to invest in some form of weight-loss therapy (bands, staples, exercise, diet, etc). Her size isn't just an object for ridicule, it's a health hazard to her.
Doing ridiculous shite like her having her own graduation is just going to feed her need to be "rescued".

Web pages and hate videos and instagram and twitter hate all continues because they know that the kid will crack and cannot avoid it forever
Parent has to come in and protect their child while teaching them to stand up for themselves

Her parents looked to be average decent looking people

I had a girl do this our senior year. She didn't even have to come to school for the last two months.

It most certainly is not. I can attest to that personally.

Hope it never happens to one of your kids. Kids can be some cruel arse people to other kids. Especially young girls. That's some brutal stuff these kids have to endure at times . Easy to dismiss it , if you don't witness it.
Yep. The thought process that it builds character etc is ridiculous and breeds trash. There's a difference between kids being dumb and legit every minute of every day bullying and I hope that if your kids ever partook in that you'd whip their arse with the swiftness.

Now you have to share your bullying experiences with us. That is the only way the conversation can move forward.

Eh, I got fricked with growing up, but nothing really bad. However, I did observe people that got it worse than me and I can assure you 90% of the time they brought it upon themselves because they failed to learn how to deal with it. The part that really helped was getting a job with a bunch of roughneck type guys. They frick with everyone, especially the new guy. You learn to sink or swim really fast and it's a great way to hone your social adversity skills.

Tell me where you get tripped up, and I will try to illuminate

Not in that line of work, but I recently read a book about the Deepwater Horizon and they talk about how you have to have thick skin when working and living on a rig. I can definitely see that. I've even been picked on and turned out fine, but it was never anything like being beat up.
It just seems to be a lot worse now (especially with girls). Specifically with the stuff being put on social media now. You used to be able to get a little bit of a break from bullying when school was out, but now this stuff just continues in the online sphere. I can see where it could become really bad. And it has to be absolute hell for the parents to deal with.

What a bunch of bullshite. I hate bullying but bullying, in moderation, forces people to develop character but she chose to completely avoid having to deal with it. This kid is going to have a tough life ahead of her.
This. The "everybody gets a trophy" issue raises its head once again.

I'm guessing that you were pretty helpful when it came to developing the smaller kids' character back in your day.

I can only imagine the kind of shite that gets said on those rigs. Those types of work atmospheres can be good in helping develop necessary social skills. They helped me.

If you go back and read what I wrote, I said "in moderation". I agree that in today's world of social media it can get extremely brutal, but I'm saying that simply running away from it isn't always the right thing to do.
