Same. I theorize that many “preppers” are just looking for an excuse to buy guns. You know, the ones always stocking up on ammo but don’t think too hard about physical fitness, first aid supplies, food, water etc

Let’s think logically here.

If you suddenly had to buy things, trade, or acquire anything, what would you need?

Gold would go an awfully long way. However, i wouldn’t tote gold bars around with out significant protection.

So, the other answer is cash and again, i would be careful how much i carried but a stash is needed.

And ammo, well you can never have enough ammo. Most versatile, the better. AR-15/remington 870/glock pistols

Does building up a supply of guns and ammo need to be thought of in the same way as cash, savings, stocks, 401K, etc?

No, that’s a complete waste of money.

I’m not saying this will happen or doom-casting, but there is another potential scenario. An EMP.

This is a great fictional book that paints the picture of what that would be like. Worth a read or listen.

You need a rifle, a pump shotgun, and a pistol baw. And enough ammo to fight off your neighbors.

Why do you need a gun? Police will protect you.

I’ve stockpiled tin foil to wrap around my head. You should do the same. Wrap it nice and tight don’t forget to cover your face.

Won’t do any good - roving bands of thugs 10,000’s deep looking for food will over run you unless you are in a militia.

Your family and friends will run you dry far quicker. What are you going to do, let dear old Uncle Larry starve to death?

That too, but if it gets as bad as Mad Max, then very little you can do. Massive starvation will lead to roving bands of thugs taking anything they can get.

Emps (as depicted in media) are basically completely science fiction.

Man-made EMPs are going to come from a very very large (aka nuclear) explosion. If a foreign adversary is attacking us with an EMP, that means nuclear war and you go back to my first post.

It’s possible there could be some sort of never before seen level of solar activity that causes widespread issues, but if it was big enough to actually knock out electronics for most/all of the world, you are almost assuredly dead within days or weeks regardless of your arsenal.

Yeah, the only way to withstand that would be to have a fortified stronghold with a lot of trained folks helping you. Either way, you'd still run out of ammo and/or be overrun eventually.

Prepping would only really work if you were an off the grid hermit somewhere in the mountains or something.

Wut lol wut?

There have been books after books after books about the days after Katrina in New Orleans.

72 hours is the time it takes for most to run out of food and water when the government fails (like it did in New Orleans) in which point guns and ammo became the currency.

Yea I mean there’s nothing wrong with buying guns and ammo for your hobby or as some home/personal protection, but if you are buying ammo for the specific purpose to have a stockpile in the event of (for all intents and purposes) the apocalypse, that seems like a very stupid use of resources.

BB guns are the weapon of choice for the committed prepper. Food will be the most important issue, and a good pump air gun can do great things for birds in general, seagulls and pelicans in a pinch. For a hundred bucks you can buy 80-100,000 bb's and have a life time supply of ammo, that doesn't need a fork lift to move.
