you could get a very nice 4runner for 40k. I have not looked at tahoes this yr but i would think 30k would not buy much of a tahoe even used. I have seen tahoes reach 50k+

My brother has an enclave, I find it very cramped inside.

edit: enclave transmission fell out at 22,000 miles, he was out of a car for 2 weeks

I would check out the Acadia as well.

My last vehicle was a Tahoe which I still love, but when I was doing the comps I couldn't justify spending 55 on the LTZ Tahoe when the Acadia Denali had everything we needed for 10k less plus gets 24-25mpg on the freeway.

Also 5* crash rated which is a factor when you're hauling kids around.

LTZ Tahoe

If she gets a Tahoe it will be LT model. She does not need 20" wheels to nail the curb with, and doesnt necessarily need leather seats (although they might be better for the kid).

I see new Suburbans and Tahoes with 6" lifts and 35" tires being driven by 5ft tall soccer moms daily.

I used to think that was hot, but I'm out of that phase.

My wife was ready to get rid of her Accord a couple years ago. She wanted an SUV, mainly for the room, and was tired of putting our daughter in a carseat while leaning down and into a car. She had put her in the carseat in my old Grand Cherokee, and it was much, much easier. She ended up with a Highlander that she kept for about a year and a half. 4 Cylinder, great MPG's, and decent enough power on the interstate. But kid #2 rolled in and she traded it for a minivan. Toyota Sienna. That thing is a beast to park, even for me. She probably should have stayed in the SUV, but the power sliding doors are a God-Send in the carpool line at school. And it has been nice to have all the room on a few road trips.

All that being said, to the OP, take a look at the Highlanders. I'd much rather buy Toyota than a GM product any day. Ours had the third row seats, which weren't much use but nice when we needed to put our daughter back there when we had 4 adults riding in the front two rows. And it gives you plenty of cargo space when it is folded down.

I got my 2011 Tahoe in March 2013, fully loaded (leather, sunroof, nav, headrest TVs, etc) with 30k miles for $31k.

Gary, on my way home I drive past Jills Gymnastics every day around 5:30.

It looks like a Skyjacker Suspension commercial is being filmed in that parking lot.

I just wanted to thank the OT for the good conversation and reviews/recommendations

Will check out Tahoe, Enclave and Highlander.

MIL just got a new 4-runner, but the wife says it feels too cramped (my wife is nearly 6ft tall).

Gas mileage and all that aside, I think it will come down to her seeing if the Enclave feels like a car/minivan more than an SUV.

Just rented one for a week. At first, I was like, "Hey, this is not bad at all." I was considering it as a potential purpose.

Then after a week, I decided, "Nope. Too sluggish. Too muddy on respnsiveness. Can't feel the road. Back-end has too much harshness."

I recommend Lexus RX350.

We were in a similar budget range and ended up with an Acura MDX. Love it. Drives smoother than a Tahoe but still can seat 7 if needed. Bigger back seat than some of the crossovers.

Wife had an Acadia ('08 I believe) a few years back. She couldn't stand the transmission in that thing -- which I assume would be the same one found in the Enclave.

We didn't really notice the odd shift points during the test drive, but it was something she couldn't get over after owning it a while. Not sure if it's different in the newer models.

Ford Edge or Explorer is what you want here.

I can also confirm the cup holders are big enought for your 44oz polar pop.

I have a Tahoe and it's the best vehicle for me at the moment. That being said, I've been in the Enclaves/Acadia and I like them. They have almost the same amount of room as the Tahoe. I think the only difference is the shoulder room in the third row. There is no room in my Tahoe when the third row is up either. I really liked the way the middle row seats in the Enclave were adjustable and I like the height. No use to sit as high as a truck if it's not a truck. One drawback is I've heard terrible reliablity reviews on the Acadia in the past. I don't know if that's been corrected in the newer models, or if that crossed over to the Buicks. Just something to look at when buying.
