from what I’ve been able to surmise, why would they consistently skip over their own neighboring state?

If they were that concerned with expansion they would have placed one in the vicinity of Memphis near the I-40 and I-55 corridors. One of the most heavily trafficked interstate areas anywhere in the US.

Yeah. I remember reading that the I-40 bridge in Memphis was only seeing about 30,000 fewer cars per day as I-10 in Baton Rouge.

I’d put one in Lakeland, TN, then in Southaven. Then eventually Marion or West Memphis AR.

Smart business people.
Works for me, I'm not in need of a stop over in LA, TX and Bama, maybe.

That's not even close to correct, both average in the mid- to high- 40k VPD range. That's just the main bridge and doesn't count the traffic that diverts to the I-55 bridge. Also, that corridor's VPD is far more about freight carrying than I-10 anywhere in Louisiana. I drive to West Memphis and Memphis on a monthly basis, will actually be moving to that area in a few months.

I was wrong.

I-10 in Baton Rouge sees about 107,000 VPD, which means that I-40 in Memphis has about 60,000 fewer vehicles per day than I-10 in Baton Rouge. The I-10 bridge has more traffic than the Hernando de Desoto and the old I-55 bridge combined.

With these numbers I can only conclude that Memphis has no idea what a traffic jam actually looks like.

The I-10 bridge in Baton Rouge and the CCC in New Orleans are both much busier than the I-40 bridge in Memphis.

The choke point in that area is where 55 and 40 converge in West Memphis for a while. If that area wasn’t such a dump, it would be a good spot for a Buc-ee’s. There are service roads and easy access to most of the roadside meth labs along the highway there.

Controversial…but the first time I went to buc-ees, I wasn’t impressed with the cleanliness of the bathrooms. Supposedly that’s their hallmark, and I caught the one near Denton on a bad day I guess.

Vote NO to Buc-ees. It'll make crime go up, we won't do anything productive with the tax revenues anyways, drugs would go up, buc-ees in arizona never delivered on promises made, i'm a business owner and i vote no.

If you can't compete with Buc-ee's just say so

Last time Bucee's tried to come to Louisiana, they asked for a tax credit. Obviously the state and parish both told them no and they moved on. The property they tried to buy ended up flooding in 2017. It's a Honda dealership now.

This is more or less the correct answer. Bucee's demands became excessive and, quite frankly, ridiculous, so the parish told them to kick rocks. It wasn't because of greedy Louisiana politicians or the parish asking Bucee's to fix roads for them.

So Louisiana got it right and SC, TN, AL, MS, TX, and GA all got it wrong with Bucee’s?

Doubtful, we’ve been to all of those states and their infrastructure, standard of life, jobs all surpass LA with maybe exception of MS.

We didn’t want all those foreign automobile plants that litter the southern states either right?

This. I’ve stopped there in Texas and Alabama to take advantage of the cheap gas and clean facilities. Only thing I’ve ever bought was maybe a big drink in the hot summer.

Years ago we were supposed to get one at the new Louisiana exit in Lafayette. Land and construction deals were already in place for the store. Buc-ees backed out due to some tax and political questions. My uncle is very good friends with the ownership and was told this at the time.

I’ve also heard DOTD royally fricked this deal up.

So they singled-out the potential Louisiana location to make excessive and ridiculous demands?

They sound like terrible businessmen. They’ll probably not succeed in business.

Yeah, we all have learned that the stereotype of greedy Louisiana politicians is false.

Louisiana routinely ranks at or near the top of US States in political transparency and good governance.

The owners should not expect public roads to be improved with public monies.

LA 29 exit off 49 where they remodeled that old exxon into a race track or whatever would’ve been a good spot. Also where they just built that Love’s north of ellick

the i-12 interstate exit at Foley AL Buc-ees has a help=wanted sign advertising $17 per hour for entry level cashiers and $19 for food prep workers.

This isn't a new thing for them either. 6-7 years ago, we made the Houston SA drive often and Buc-ees in Luling had signs up saying $15 per hour then. They're the Chick Fil A of convenience store/gas stations. They pay better and therefore get better employees.
