BRPD Officer Blane Salamoni Issued Summons For Simple Battery During June 2016 Arrest

Baton Rouge police have issued a summons for simple battery to Blane Salamoni — the officer fired last month for his role in the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling — accusing him of slapping a suspect during a 2016 arrest captured on body camera video.
Salamoni received the misdemeanor summons Friday afternoon, according to one of his attorneys, who said the police proceeded with the citation even though the alleged victim said he did not wish to pursue charges.
The attorney, Brant M. Mayer, questioned the timing of the case, which he said appeared to be aimed at influencing Salamoni's termination appeal. That appeal remains pending before the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Board.
"I think everybody is going to see this for what it is," Mayer said Sunday. "Our client files his appeal, and then this charge just miraculously appears. They've had this footage for almost two years"
Details of the June 2016 arrest were not immediately available Sunday night, and a Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. Police Chief Murphy Paul declined to discuss the details of the summons, saying he would release more information to the public early Monday.
It's not clear whether the Police Department intends to release footage of the arrest, which happened just weeks before Sterling was fatally shot in front of the Triple S Food Mart in Baton Rouge.
"There was a simple battery," Paul said. "Our officers believed there was probable cause, they charged accordingly."
Salamoni is apparently accused of slapping the suspect in the back of his head, said Mayer, who added he has not seen the body camera footage. The alleged victim "still had a firearm on his person and was running his mouth" when the slapping occurred, Mayer said.
"We believe that he just gave him a pop on the head and told him to calm down and hush," he said, adding Salamoni did not recall specifics of the arrest. "It was about as bland as you can imagine."

Not sure what to think about this.
Can't really give an opinion without seeing exactly what happened.

After seeing how he acted with sterling, I have no doubt blane was overreacting and On a power trip.
And I’m about as pro police as they come. Look at my post history.

Salamoni seems like an a-hole, no doubt.
This just reeks of BRPD trying to avoid a settlement.

I agree, but this part makes it look like Murphy Paul and SWB just looking to charge him to keep him from getting his job back.

If the victim declined to pursue charges against a cop made famous across the country for the high-profile shooting he was involved in, I cannot imagine they have a major incident here.

Victims don't pursue charges. The state (or in this case, the City) does.

Salamoni is a POS. Accept it

I’m sure the only reason this is in the news is because he is trying to get his job back. With that being said it seems the guy has some issues.

This may have less to do with Salamoni‘s appeal than it does with any upcoming civil suits. It just wouldn’t look good if it was shown that the PD/DA did nothing in a matter that occurred just before Alton Sterling.

What worries me is this kind bs mirrors germany in the 1930s.
Complete socialistic police state, minus the dictator.

If video is as it states, this is just another example of someone who’s not fit to be a cop. It’s fine to question the timing of this release, but this doesn’t come as a surprise after watching the body game video from AS incident.

If he does this then we need to check every BRPD camera from the same time period and every second of footage. If any other officer did the same thing then they need to receive a citation also. If they treat one person this way they need to treat every officer the same.
Then we need to check footage from Paul Murphy’s state police vehicle and even as a supervisor see if he did anything wrong.
Seems like a witch hunt on one former officer.
If you go after one of them they need to check all body cameras and go back the same time or it is a witch hunt.
