Honestly, I don't care about drunks when the top speed getting off campus is 5mph. Just let me get the home without any additional hold ups

They don't give a shite about that. Both times I've driven through one I was forced to turn and drive through rather than go the direction I wanted to go. The only other time I was successful at bypassing the checkpoint but I was immediately pulled over.
BRPD is full of a bunch of idiots anyway. They can't even keep their own officers from getting shite housed and driving around.

They give a shite after they had to toss about 60 cases after the FL game a couple of years ago. It may not be in the paper but a frick up like that gets noticed in the Department and around the courthouse.

Have you all seen an increase in checkpoints the past couple of years? Were they around in the 90's? I don't recall seeing any 15-20 years ago.

Stanford and the On-ramp for 10 eastbound @ Acadian are popular spots because of traffic volume and drivers' inability to see them until it's too late.

They weren't around. It was strictly a money decision. The department gets outside funding for running these things and the officers love it because they cash in big with overtime. It has nothing to do with public safety.
And to answer the OP, they did a checkpoint a few years ago after a day game and all of the cases were thrown out because they did not follow the rules laid out by a federal court ruling. BRPD made a few defense attorneys a lot of money with that gaff. In fact, if you ever get caught up in one of these things, get a good DUI attorney ASAP. These BRPD idiots screw something up 95% of the time and your attorney can get the charges thrown out or reduced.
eta. Drunk driving is deplorable but .08 is not drunk and most cases deal with drivers at or slightly above the legal limit. That's my biggest problem with these checkpoints/laws.

They can charge you no matter what you blow and if you refuse you get your license taken away. If you drive around the checkpoint they pull you over anyway. Why on earth would anyone in this city trust BRPD to do anything correctly?

Working LSU already brings in good revenue for the BRPD. Checkpoints are about revenue collection, not public safety.

I've passed through them on one of the roads perpendicular to Stanford, the exit ramp at Dalrymple, and also on Coursey Blvd. Luckily, was sober ever time. The one on Coursey I was going the opposite direction so didn't officially pass through it, but I noticed after I passed that they had marked cars with their lights off blocking at least the two crossovers proceeding the checkpoint. The one off the exit, once you exited, you were going through it, like it or not. The one off Stanford, once you turned on that street you were going through it, like it or not. They know what their doing, and my experience is that you are trapped in before you know it, but alas, I guess that is the point.

Maybe a hijack but it's related. .08 is bullshite and some experiment with a few volunteers in a parking lot is hardly solid science on how people respond to a few drinks.
People getting DWIs at .089 or .9 tend to remember EVERY detail of the incident and are usually in WTF mode about the primary offense. Tailgating is a popular one on Perkins. They get you when you stopped at a stop light and aren't two car lengths away from car in front of you. Bam, you just got a DWI after 3 beers(chick I know got popped this way and blew a .089).
I support much tougher penalties for DWI, especially after the first. But I would like to see the BAC at .13.

Because they are supposed to be random in many respects to meet the test of the Supreme Court. I look forward to the day when they revisit that decision and strike checkpoints down as violative of the 5th amendment.
