I have no idea. I just think that nice restaurants (I'm guessing we aren't talking about outback
) would care more about their customers dining experience than posting pictures on Instagram trying to shame their own customers...that is extremely unprofessional and trashy. Just make it a policy instead of putting it on social media

It's actually pretty common...really not any different than bringing a nice bottle of wine to a restaurant. I wouldn't bring a DQ ice cream cake, but the establishment will hold onto it after you finish your meal and they'll typically charge you a cake cutting fee.

We have 30ish people including our wives. It's at an awesome restaurant downtown in a private room.
No birthday cake but we'll definitely order birthday shots for the whole table.
ETA:
We do it every year

I see nothing wrong with it and I am sure any restaurant would cater to a party that size every need...should at least.

Saw this one time at Eddie Merlot's in Louisville.
Very nice steak place that will run you @ $150 for two for a night.
Some folk came in with their best jeans and Air Jordan's to celebrate a girls 16th b-day. Big Wal-Mart sheet cake with wax numbers 1 & 6 stuck on the middle.
It was tacky, but I agree, if you are in a chain restaurant, where people are throwing back cheap drinks etc, it's no big deal.

I just used trashy because it's the OT but to have a party as an adult is definitely weird imo
It's not like the birthday person is sending out invitations for his/her party. Someone organizes a dinner on their behalf. Fail to see the weirdness.

So if the owner can only get the customers for dinner rather than dinner and dessert he would prefer to not have the business at all?

I always dreaded the huge group birthday dinners in restaurants. Thank goodness that only seems to be a phase from like 18-20. I haven't had any friends do it since we were underage.
A private room isn't as bad.. especially if it is on one tab.
A big table in the restaurant with all separate checks? fricking kill me right now.

It's ok to bring a birthday cake to a restaurant as long as you can get the entire waitstaff to sing happy birthday and clap and cheer as they sing. Hell, even bring out the dishwasher to sing.

It's super common and most places will make room on the shelf in the walk in too.

you know 30 people aren't going to be on one tab

Alot of people do this in Hammond. They get their Bday cakes from the Cocoa Bean and go eat at a nice restuarant

Worked at a restaurant years ago. Myself, nor anyone I worked with thought this was a big deal. Heck, most workers like it because the people that bring the cake rarely ate it all, and gave the rest to the staff.

The way we handle this is someone pays the whole check and we divide the cost by number of people if everyone ordered similar stuff or calculate it if some people went crazy. Then just square up with cash later.

After 4 years on the site, I'm still surprised at how many awful people managed to find a single corner of the Internet. I love it.
