I remember the one on Carrollton Ave. in Mid-City that was so packed with inventory it was almost like a hoarder's house. They had stuff everywhere from floor to damn near ceiling.

You mentioned Gus Mayer's, a good men's store. Another was Joe Gemelli's and one of my cousins and I did some work in his store when he was expanding his stores footprint. One day he and I were introduced to Muhamad Ali in his store when he was in town to fight Leon Spinks at the Superdome in 78.

For a kid growing up in the 70s, that place was like walking into Nirvana. We really didn’t have any big sporting good stores in the New Orleans area back then other than Security. There was no Dick's or Academy back then. And even those stores just don’t compare to the Carrollton Security as I remember it.

Your parents would take you to Kmart or Woolco and you would go to their little small sporting goods section while your parents shopped. Hell, even Schweggmann’s had a small small goods sections that was primarily fishing stuff.

But Security was the real f*cking deal. They had more f*cking shoes and cleats than you’ve ever seen in your life with actual brand names. I’d beg my parents to take me to Security.

Hell, even when we got the Security store on Veterans in Metairie, it just didn’t measure up. Maybe it was nostalgia or I was a little older and just didn’t appreciate the Veterans store as much as I should have, but that Carrollton store will always be the greatest sporting goods store in history for me.

As I recall, it had a logo similar to the Evel Knievel logo...

It really didn't have the same vibe as the Carrollton Store.

You mentioned Schwegmann's and I shopped at the one in Gentilly that had a bar, sporting goods, a bank, eye Dr. and several other businesses housed in that huge store.

I grew up in the Lower 9th Ward and the store we went to the most was only 3 blocks from our house on St. Claude between Caffin Ave. and Flood St. called Puglia's. They had a fairly large grocery store then the parking lot and on the corner of Flood St. was the Sporting Goods store in a separate building.

Puglia's Sporting Goods is still in business, but on Vets now. I went to school with the Puglia's.

I did that once as a teen... several crashes didn't scare me as badly as the turbulence between those two trailers.

Here's a look at Puglia's.

Retro bassin' is a fun channel to check out every now and then.
