Like I had some say in whether or not I deployed. There’s Marines going through entire enlistments that never deploy right now. Yeah, I’d have liked to have been able to go and do my job, but it wasn’t in the cards. I can’t control that, but it doesn’t mean that I can’t comment on the absurdity of having an infantry division led by a woman or by somebody that isn’t a member of the infantry.

frick yourself.

Yup, and if I had to do it over again, I’d sign an active contract. Even though right now, there’s no guarantee Corps-wide for a deployment.

Yes, because the governor of California is responsible for the US military.

Haha nah, I’ve put it behind me, I accepted that it wasn’t going to happen. Thought I was going to catch a deployment to Afghanistan this year but as usual, that shite got cancelled.

When did you join? Everyone I know from the Marines who joined post 9/11 has a CAR.

2013, I don’t think any of the guys that went active infantry from my boot camp cycle or SOI have a CAR.

Army Spc. Monica Lin Brown saved the lives of fellow soldiers after a roadside bomb tore through a convoy of Humvees in the eastern Paktia province in April 2007, the military said. After the explosion, which wounded five soldiers in her unit, Brown ran through insurgent gunfire and used her body to shield wounded comrades as mortars fell less than 100 yards away, the military said.

Now that’s what I call anecdote.

This is rich. I find it ironic someone with zero combat experience is downplaying a Silver Star recipient's actions in combat because they are female

They probably "deployed" via UDP to Oki.

I particularly love when a non-infantry officer comes in and commands an infantry division. All in the name of progress. Forward!

There are plenty of generals who command divisions that they weren't branched prior. She would've gone to the War College and learned everything about strategic planning. Not being in infantry is irrelevant, what a division commander does would be significantly different than any field grade officer would be doing in that same branch.

Yeah but that’s not what I meant.

I know that officially that’s a deployment, but I don’t know an infantryman that would consider that a real deployment.

As close friends, about 20. All but one served on active duty. However, it is important to mention, all of these joined between 2002-2007.

Didn’t downplay it. What she did was heroic and she earned a well deserved silver star for it. But it is anecdotal, how many people do you know that have a silver star? That’s somebody that went above and beyond. She’s the exception for every military member, not the rule.
