More evidence that the way EBR does business doesn’t work. We can not use our funds where it’s most needed because so much of our tax dollars are dedicated to different entities.

Now the DA wants his own tax.

BREC tax renewal was just on the ballot. It passed despite the board’s financial chairman saying they don’t deserve the renewal or NEW tax because they can’t keep their books straight.

We NEVER vote down renewals or new taxes. They don’t impact non property owners so why should most care?

Library attendance numbers are down.

Prison attendance numbers are up.

I’m guessing it’s the people that don’t own property but get to vote who pass these things.

I am astounded at how easy every tax renewal passes, usually in a landslide.

BREC will blow through the renewal money faster than the budget allows bc they are so backed up and don’t know how to get out of it.

Hey BREC, stop throwing money at a failing zoo in a failing part of the city.

While having more money is nice, the primary reason entities seek out a dedicated tax is for more consistent funding. Once you have your tax in place, you basically know what your budget is going to be every year and can plan for it. If you have to go to the mayor's office to sing for (a significant portion of) your supper every year, it gets old. When things outside of your control gets your city allocation slashed by like 20%, it becomes untenable.

I believe this is where they are at. The funds they have are being eaten up by past obligations and massive inefficiencies. Any household that’s run like that, the occupants would be homeless within a year.

That’s what they sell you when it’s time to vote for the new tax.

But here is what really happens:
1) They collect more money than was forecasted.
2) The funding they were already getting out of the general fund is cut off and the mayor uses it for other things.
3) When property is reassessed they find reasons not to roll it over. We pay more tax.
4) As the parish grows they take in more and more and their entity spends more and more.

Years ago I bought into the notion that a dedicated tax was best and voted for the Library tax. Pat Screen took away the library funding and used it goff Ed ohh Ty her things and the Library Board grew and grew. Now they run large surpluses while our DA begs for money.

I'll sidestep any discussion on inefficiencies, but I will say that I know that a nauseating percentage of Hillar's budget goes to funding retirement obligations.

You're misunderstanding me if you interpreted my post to mean I think EBR is a good steward of the money it has. I was simply explaining why the agency itself generally wants a dedicated tax.

It’s how it’s sold. Who’s not for parks, the elderly, and libraries. But when they have more money than they know what to do with it is where the problem is. They keep growing so they say they need more funding. Lots of employees.

The weird thing is how people want more law enforcement and corrections, but no one wants more money for the courts. That's where the bottleneck is.

Try dealing with a public defender.

But the fact is that if you want to arrest more suspects and put them in prison, they have to pass through the court first.
