True that is their main objective but they do anything they can not to get caught and always commit suicide in one way or another so if he was low on ammo it would make sense that he would shoot himself.

When they commit suicide, they take others out with them. The key is to take out as many as possible. It's very rare for them to straight up off themselves without hurting anyone else
