Totally agree with those who have said hospitals aren't giving the healthcare workers enough PPE to stay safe. Saw this segment while I was in the airport yesterday and was shocked that this is what they're being given and that this is the process. It also shows how they can get contaminated. Shouldn't these people be going through some sort of decontamination chamber before they remove their stuff? (video at the bottom)

ETA: Basically what I was saying earlier...calling BS on the CDC: "Gupta is not the first medical professional to question the CDC protocols and point out potential vulnerabilities. Among others, ABC's chief health and medical editor, Dr. Richard Besser, has directly contradicted the CDC's statements that any American hospital can safely treat Ebola patients, arguing that only a few facilities around the country truly have the advanced biocontainment equipment, as well as the expert training needed to implement it properly."

One nurse said her hospital can't even provide them with eye goggles cause they can't afford it!!

The isolation room we have on our floor has no special chamber though. No anteroom...door to room directly into main hallway. I would imagine other older hospitals are the same.

I was just messing with you Nurse. But seriously, what happens when nurses and doctors start to strike because they don't have the proper PPE and training.

That is crazy to me. I think it should be not unlike the treatment response to a chemical nerve agent attack. Where everyone who may have been in contact goes through a full decontamination after each potential exposure.

It's something to worry about because the healthcare workers who are at risk of exposure aren't being provided with proper training and equipment.

Not sure. Again...I don't live in a union state. Nurses don't strike here.

A friend of mine who's a travel nurse has already gotten calls begging her to go to Dallas. People are quitting over it.

I'm afraid this is going to get ugly in the next few months.

I made the joke earlier, and not to make this political, but can you imagine the roar from the liberals if this had/was happening Bush's watch?

With flu and other respiratory viruses season starting it will def make things more difficult.

Its worse than that according to the report I heard today. The USA has 4 hospitals with the necessary isolation/decontamination facilities to handle these contagious people. Between the 4 hospitals, there are 11 rooms to accommodate these patients. WTF? Why are these patients being sent to "regular" hospitals?
Posted on 10/15/14 at 3:19 pm to lsunurse
Not at all! It's infuriating. Even if all hospitals had the equipment and training recommended by the CDC, this case is proof that they don't work.
Posted on 10/15/14 at 3:20 pm to tigerinthebueche
Well hopefully with all the negative press the Dallas hospital is receiving....other hospital administrators will go into CYA mode and step up the process of doing training and obtaining appropriate equipment.

11,500 nurses on this conference call!

I don't understand this...instead of charging $20 for tylenol just charge $25

I asked earlier, not that I was expecting a response, but I'm curious as to why the first nurse/patient wasn't transported to Emory, while the second one is.
