The bulk of the difference is from a surge of around 800 new H-1Bs given to IBM in 2015 but even still it's something to hang our hats on.

Deloitte has 81 employees in Baton Rouge?

Neither BR nor NOLA have a consulting office for the big D.

Amazing. You would think BR had better Indian restaurants than nola does because of this.

as someone who deals a lot with these people.
i have stories for days and days and days on how shitty they are, but the H-1B program needs to go, NOW. It's ruining the IT industry. These people are really really shitty.

and i'm not just talking about their personal hygiene

$67k a year and $73k a year? Entirely overpaid for their skill i would imagine. IBM getting ripped off. Offer them $40k, they'll take, then they'll move over their entire family tree over here, and all squat in the same 2 bedroom house..

Some of the H-1Bs I work with make 6 figures. Some are based out of other states and fly in weekly.

Indians love to segregate themselves, and will push you out in a heartbeat.

A distant family member was in town for T-giving, and he's losing his job due to getting pushed out of the team he was on. They slowly filled his group up with their buddies.

At my company the men sit at one table, and the women sit at another near by.

There are some really cool ones, but they tend to have gotten ostracized by others. Watching the caste system even here is interesting. I was in a meeting where one guy politely corrected another, and you can just tell that it wasnt taken well. Not because he was wrong, but because of the caste system mindset back in india.

Worked at IBM in Baton Rouge for a while. Not great people to work with at all. Definitely something that shouldn't be bragged about.

Not a consulting office. It's tax and audit only.

IBM is going through a weird transition. They are trying to correct some of their top heavy structure while growing in a couple of IT support and consulting areas (Baton Rouge and a couple of other offices are growing).

It's definitely a nice thing to have in town especially if it draws recruits, interns, and employees from LSU, UNO, SU, ULL, ULM, etc.

I disagree with eliminating it, but there's definitely widespread abuse and major reforms are desperately needed.

I don't think Deloitte, PWC, or IBM Consulting make a practice out of abusing the system company wide - but DXE, Infosys, etc. and a number of smaller consulting firms are another story entirely.

A LOT of dishonest companies would rather recruit out of India and train them to handle work in the US than to do the same with an American employee. If those workers lose the sponsorship, they are fricked....so they aren't aggressive about asking for raises and can't easily transfer.

I think a salary floor for H1B employees needs to be indexed to inflation and stepped up to at least $120K/year. It should be only for workers who have skills that can't be filled in the US - it's NOT for unskilled people to be trained to replace American employees. It was intended to be for people with special skills that are needed here.

It seems like everyone wants to fix this except the powerful silicon valley companies and big tech companies.

We can't push the next generation to go into STEM fields, then give away their prospects for future employment like this.

It's meant as a low cost resource center with little long term growth for American employees.

You have to start somewhere.

IBM is a huge multi-national company. There's certainly opportunity to grow from within unless you are not willing to take opportunities in new business units or new locations.

There is little long term growth at massive multi-national firms like that for any American employee that is not open to relocation regardless of where they start out. That's true of everything from Google to ExxonMobil.
