Bourbon Street work: Costs for one block near $1 million

Total Estimate for 8 Blocks: $2.2m
Seriously, when is the last time you've heard of a government project in New Orleans actually function according to plan?
Your tax dollars hard at work, New Orleans residents.
Also, obligatory "something something statues"
quote:
It will cost nearly $1 million to reconstruct just the first block of Bourbon Street, raising questions of how the city plans to finish roadwork in all eight blocks in the iconic French Quarter corridor's project within the $2.2 million tab city records and officials say was the original estimate.
Costs are mounting after the city jettisoned a directive for the project's general contractor, Hard Rock Construction, to undertake reconstruction of the eight blocks via a maintenance contract -- as opposed to the kind of public-works contract typically used for major roadwork. Now, the city is moving block-by-block on Bourbon, providing new cost estimates for each block rather than one bill for the whole project.
The tally is growing and the city has not issued all the documents indicating what is the current total estimate.
"It may end up being an $8 (million) or $9 million project," Andre Kelly, New Orleans district manager for Louisiana Associated General Contractors, said Monday (July 24). "Obviously, that's not maintenance."

Mitch Landrieu will not rest until this city is broken completely

Banana republic. And LOL at people who think it'll get better. Just wait until the local ignorants and SJWs put LaToya Cantrell in office.

My company has been one of the big boys in that line of work for 75 years. We looked at that project, and passed on even bidding...

Not a native but I have lived in Nola. I love the city but I'm uncertain about its future. BR is about 5-10 years behind but on a similar trajectory.

Well I think Boh Bros has sucked enough money out of the city as it is. They are as crooked and rotten as the rest of the city.

Public municipalities need to stop underestimating cost of projects. People don't really mind if you tell them the truth that certain things may be expensive, but don't say it will be cheap then have it cost 5x that.

What makes you say that?

Fixing the roads will at least improve the city unlike certain other wasteful expenditures.

I agree, and I don't work for those guys.

I'd love to know just how old those lines are that they are replacing. I also wonder if they find any old artifacts or anything like that as they're digging. From the pictures I saw online, it's a major freaking project. The lines appeared to be 10 feet underground.

$9 million to fix one of the most iconic streets in the world seems to be about what I would expect this to cost.
As for Boh Brothers. Did they have the contract to redo Napoleon and now Jefferson? It took like 8 years to redo Napoleon, there is no telling how long it'll take to redo 8 blocks of Bourbon.

I can guarantee no one from the DPW or SWB thought it would cost $2.2 million.
Hell, a quick search brought me to this fact sheet from 2013:
LINK /
quote:
Average cost for full depth reconstruction of one city block: $414,000
Full Reconstruction: Full replacement of pavement for
the entire length and width of block as well as sub-surface utility repairs.
I don't think it's crazy to think that a street like Bourbon might be double the average cost considering risk and unknown conditions.
They did the maintenance route to avoid the lengthy design and public bid. Otherwise, it would have never been completed during the current mayor's term. It might not even have started until the new mayor.

Without discrediting the embezzlement theory, I think they were hoping to get a lot out the way for the 300 year anny

Well I don't care if you do or not, however, if you work for a contractor that has been doing work in the city of New Orleans for 75 years, I promise they've been involved in some shady shite.

I know nothing about street repair but this sounds absolutely insane. How and why in the hell could it take 8 freaking years?

Think it was Jefferson and about 5 years, although Napoleon took a long time too.
It was more than just redoing a road. It was redoing (in some cases actually doing for the first time) infrastructure.
What infrastructure? All of it. It is crazy the amount of work the had to do with everyone bitching around them and keeping everything moving (albeit, barely).
