Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's moving into City Bar location; old B&T's will become restaurant

The owner of the downtown Baton Rouge building that hosts Happy’s Irish Pub has filed to evict the bar, the second such action against the same bar owner in as many weeks, public records show.

Chad Hughes, who owns Happy’s and Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s among other businesses, says he has a tentative agreement to buy Happy’s Third Street home and is waiting for loan approval. However, he says building owner Lee Overton wants to collect back rent from the COVID-19 shutdown as part of the purchase price, “hence the dispute,” adding that Happy’s “isn’t going anywhere.”

Overton’s attorney did not respond to calls and emails seeking comment in time for this report. In a separate case, property owner Danny McGlynn has sued to evict Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s, another of Hughes’ Third Street bars, for nonpayment of rent. Hughes is in the process of moving Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s down the street to a building he bought in 2020, though the lease at the current location doesn’t expire until the end of next year, court filings show.

McGlynn says he hopes to negotiate payment for the remainder of the lease’s term. Hughes bounced three checks to McGlynn’s company this year, and his name is on the lease individually along with that of his company, according to documents filed by McGlynn’s attorney.

Hughes, who has stakes in other Baton Rouge businesses including Ivar’s Sports Bar and Grill and Unleaded BBQ, bought the City Bar Building in 2020. The vacant downstairs floor was previously home to Rio Tacos and Tequila, which closed last year.

Local attorney Danny McGlynn owns the building at 214 3rd St., that Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's is vacating. While the bar's lease currently runs through 2024, McGlynn said he was confident he would "be able to work something out" with the departing business and its owner.
