Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's, the popular Cajun-themed downtown bar, will soon be on the move.

The bar will shift into the building located at 333 3rd St., which is currently inhabited upstairs by City Bar. The building is owned by Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's owner Chad Hughes, who said the new bar would take on the Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's name.

Hughes said he was hoping the new location would open its doors at the end of the month.

"The downstairs of the City Bar building is vacant, so instead of paying rent to someone else we'll be combining a two into one, pretty much," Hughes said.

The new location will provide live music in the current Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's style downstairs, while upstairs will have a more of an upbeat, DJ flavor.

Hughes, who has stakes in other Baton Rouge businesses including Ivar’s Sports Bar and Grill and Unleaded BBQ, bought the City Bar Building in 2020. The vacant downstairs floor was previously home to Rio Tacos and Tequila, which closed last year.

Local attorney Danny McGlynn owns the building at 214 3rd St., that Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's is vacating. While the bar's lease currently runs through 2024, McGlynn said he was confident he would "be able to work something out" with the departing business and its owner.

McGlynn said a new higher-end restaurant and lounge concept was earmarked for the space, though when it would open depended on when loose ends with Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's were tidied up.

I’m surprised anywhere is still open.

The nightlife downtown hasn’t been particularly inviting for a number of years now, probably around the time SWB started fricking with them because political rivals had a stake in them.

Has to be a money laundering scheme. Not a shot in hell that bar hasn’t been bleeding money the last 3+ years.

The owner of the downtown Baton Rouge building that hosts Happy’s Irish Pub has filed to evict the bar, the second such action against the same bar owner in as many weeks, public records show.

Chad Hughes, who owns Happy’s and Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s among other businesses, says he has a tentative agreement to buy Happy’s Third Street home and is waiting for loan approval. However, he says building owner Lee Overton wants to collect back rent from the COVID-19 shutdown as part of the purchase price, “hence the dispute,” adding that Happy’s “isn’t going anywhere.”

Overton’s attorney did not respond to calls and emails seeking comment in time for this report. In a separate case, property owner Danny McGlynn has sued to evict Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s, another of Hughes’ Third Street bars, for nonpayment of rent. Hughes is in the process of moving Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s down the street to a building he bought in 2020, though the lease at the current location doesn’t expire until the end of next year, court filings show.

McGlynn says he hopes to negotiate payment for the remainder of the lease’s term. Hughes bounced three checks to McGlynn’s company this year, and his name is on the lease individually along with that of his company, according to documents filed by McGlynn’s attorney.

I've stayed many weekends in downtown BR over the last few years at either the Hilton or Hampton Inn right down the street (and around the corner). I can tell you every time I've driven by there in the 10PM - 11PM area it has been a ghost town in B&Ts. It's not nearly what it was at it's height in the mid to late 2000s.

I'm like the rest of ya'll I don't see how they are even open...no way they are making money.

I'm still not going eat or drink anywhere close to downtown BR. Not worth it.

Why can’t BR have anything nice and keep it?
The Mrs. and I would dine downtown at one if the nice restaurants on Third Street. After dinner we’d pop in one if the bars and play bowling.

It’s good that the Perkins Overpass is hanging on and that Government is doing well. I wish Perkins Rowe had some better places. That development could be nice too.

Broome has pretty much singlehandedly destroyed Baton Rouge's downtown nightlife. Kip Holden worked so hard to get business owners to reinvest in downtown after years of it being a wasteland. Broome undid all of that in less than four years.

All over her 2016 political pissing match with Delgado who owned a few bars in downtown BR.
