I bought that recently and thought it started slow. Does it get better?

Although it's not along the lines of those, I loved the James Lee Burke "Dave Robicheax" novels. There are about 20 of them and somewhat tied together.

Yes there are some amazing battles and the pace definitely picks up. Less names to remember than game of thrones. I would really like to see a movie or tv series set in that world.

Its good, but gets a little wild there at the end haha. Feels more like a video game then a story sometimes.
The Dresden Files is a great series if you like fantasy and magic. I tore threw the entire series after reading the first one. Its hilarious also.

The stand alone novels are terrific as well. Maybe even better.

Check out the Robin Hobb Farseer Trilogy (along with the others set in that universe). Strongly recommend.
