I think it's fine to call them criminals for breaking immigration laws.

If you notice, it's usually most simple-minded who do this. Smarter and more reasonable people can be extremely anti-immigration and argue that position without emotional appeals to the fears of other dumb people.

Years ago I had a family member living in Iowa working at one of the meat packing plants. He got laid off when the company replaced most of the local workers with Hispanic workers. He always said, it was hinted at that they were mostly illegals.
