Boat and its not really close imo
I use my pool almost every day from april to october
This
So so so so many new money people who are ALSO not outside, and also not handy get pools
The result is lack of use and thus the narrative develops that they are a waste
If you are remotely handy/not lazy, enjoy outside and enjoy company......then getting a pool is a sound investment
Anybody who disagrees falls into one of the above categories

Nothing is a waste if you use it and it brings you joy.
Unless of course you can’t afford it and it takes from important things and causes you stress because you made a bad choice.

sounds like someone is jelly their neighbor has a boat, a pool and electricity after a storm.
As long as your bills are covered and you are providing for your family now and in the future, if you have extra left over for the fun stuff, why not?

I can tell you that my parents saved every penny they ever made. They never took one vacation. They never bought a nice car. They don't own extra clothing. They don't eat out. They buy only generic food.
They are in their 80's now. Have a decent savings and are miserable people. They are also super judgey of how their neighbors spend their money. Or of anyone that buys something that isn't strictly necessary for survival.
You have one life. Sometimes you gotta lean in.

My cousin is single and 33 and owns his own business and is doing very well for himself. Wanted a sporty water skiing boat 2 years ago and I said he will never use it.
The dude is out on the lake every weekend 5 months a year, full of tail and beer. Im jealous as hell.

Both are horrible financial decisions

My new pool construction starts next week. I’m pumped and plan on using it throughout the year.

While home genset 5-7k vs 100k

A home generator has always been on my bucket list even though the power doesn’t go out around here very often. The older I get the more I’m thinking about getting one.
A boat or pool, plus the maintenance that comes with them, never interested me. But nothing against those who have them.

A boat would get more use in south Louisiana imo. We have a party barge and stay in it in the summer.

In 2017, my pool needed a new vinyl liner. The cost of the liner, plus one year/season's maintenance, cost the same as getting it filled in. My girls were grown and married, and the pool got very little use, so the choice was easy.
Both my electric and water bills went down substantially, and I obviously spend nothing on cleaning/maintenance.
One of the best decisions I've ever made.

May have been said already, but unless you live on the water, it’s obviously much easier to just enjoy the pool than everything needed to take the boat out.
Of course the boat option offers more fun and versatility, but you really have to be able to work it into your routine. Often busy on the weekends with kid sports or other things, probably won’t use it often enough.

It completely depends on the choices you make in purchasing and on how you utilize it and take care of it
Buy a couple year-old boat that retailed for 70 K and get it for 40 K and keep it for 10 years to 15 years using it frequently and you got a lot of enjoyment out of your money and value, take care of it and you sell that boat after 15 years for 25 grand and it cost you $1000 a year to own a nice boat and enjoy it
Don’t use it don’t take care of it. You might as well flushed your money down the toilet.
Swimming pool? 100 K in a mutual fund right now. compounding until you retire.
Or maybe getting about the same hundred K added to the selling price of your house one day.
Now you can take these two extremes and point out the people that drop 150 K plus on a pool when their neighborhood has a very nice one, that’s pretty stupid.
Or the idiot that drops 250 K on a wakeboard boat

So is having children. You should make good financial decisions to have a happy life, not live an unhappy life because it's a good financial decision.
(If you can't afford the boat/ pool comfortably, then it doesn't make sense because you will wind up with an unhappy life).

If you have to work all the time to pay for either and don't have time to use it they are equally bad.
