how the frick do you get that from 3.5 bans and 17 DM's I feel like I'm missing out on an important cultural reference.

Maybe it's a fried food craving

They sold Kaolin (white clay) at gas stations in SW Ga and SE Al during the 80s to mid 90s in my part of the world. Was on the counter labeled as white dirt or Grandma's white dirt.
To my knowledge, it was primarily a product the black folks bought - don't know if they just ate it straight up or used it in cooking or what - but it was definitely a thing in my part of the world at one time. Never tried it - may have missed on on a real treat... probably not.
But it wasn't corn starch for sure.

crazy. I'm from the midwest originally, so some of the southern intricacies are new to me. I've not heard of this before. I wonder if it's possible that with the lack of healthy (ish) or fresh foods that there is a nutrient deficiency causing this eating peculiarity? I asked the question in good faith. It does seem (on line) to be mostly black women.
I don't think it's a Pica issue, as wouldn't they be referencing their pregnancies, or 'cravings', or the like?

from your link:
"Pica may be a cultural practice not associated with a deficiency or disorder. Ingestion of kaolin (white clay) among African American women in the US state of Georgia shows the practice there to be a DSM-4 "culture-bound syndrome" and "not selectively associated with other psychopathology"

for real? and presumably people would pay for it? And eat it? I don't know what is more insane.

South Carolinians are known as “Sandlappers” which many link to the local people that used to eat soil.

Y'all I've learned more in the last hour than I have all month.. I'm not sure what I've learned is valuable or not, but it's something I didn't know...

I saw a reference to this on twitter, and thought it was BS. Looked It up on Youtube and apparently it is a thing. Has anyone else heard of this or done this? Why?
Yeah, this isn't really a thing.

IIRC “Pica” is a catch all term for eating/craving stuff that’s food. Dirt, clay, ice, chalk, ashes, coffee grounds, cardboard, and all kinds of crazy stuff.
Pica can be psychogenic, as in some flavor of crazy. Can also be physiologically driven, like malnutrition, anemia, and pregnancy. Though I guess pregnancy probably qualifies as both.

I would think it would make them constipated...

I watched a few of them eat the crunchy cornstarch blocks and it was basically disgusting. Cornstarch addicts?

fricking disgusting. Not surprised though.

I’m in healthcare and each one who reported eating baby powder was also anemic.

Craving/eating ice is a symptom of anemia,if I remember correctly.
