They sold Kaolin (white clay) at gas stations in SW Ga and SE Al during the 80s to mid 90s in my part of the world. Was on the counter labeled as white dirt or Grandma's white dirt. To my knowledge, it was primarily a product the black folks bought - don't know if they just ate it straight up or used it in cooking or what - but it was definitely a thing in my part of the world at one time. Never tried it - may have missed on on a real treat... probably not. But it wasn't corn starch for sure.

Ive heard is called sour dirt/clay here in Alabama. I have seen it at gas stations, but never knew what it was for. I had no idea people just ate it, that's strange.

It used to be very common for stores in rural areas of Georgia and South Carolina and North Florida to sell packages of white dirt as a snack. Kaolin, a basic ingredient in paint and paper and porcelain. Lots of people, mostly black but white folks did it also, would eat a LOT of white dirt...there is some indication that the practice is dangerous in that it robs the body of the ability to absorb some nutrients. It used to be very common...I haven't known anyone who did it in years and have not seen any for sell in a long time but I suspect it is still a thing...

While driving back from Colorado several years ago I heard about this practice being discussed on the radio late at night on 'Coast to Coast'. The host had interviewed one black woman from Mississippi who did this several times a year.

The amount of smoke detector beeps in that compilation video… Why is that a thing?
My wife is a teacher and during covid lockdowns she taught virtually. I was amazed by how many smoke detectors beeeped and they would let it go for weeks. Because people are f’ing lazy.
