Bizarre talk with AT&T customer service regarding rates

Was paying my home bills at the office today and my AT&T Internet bills were next to each other. I noted that I was paying $79 for home internet and $40 for business internet with similar speeds (the home internet is slightly faster due to streaming TV needs).
I picked up the phone and called ATT to ask about this. They quickly connected me to the Loyalty Department and this is where it got strange. I asked why the difference in price and the lady mumbled some BS about my home service being "old and out of date". I just got that package six months ago.
Before I could question her further, she clicks some buttons tells me she is putting me in a faster plan and the price is DROPPING to $55. I think "cool" but then she says "I am applying a $50 per month discount for the next six months." OK, $15 a month at this point. WTH? I am waiting on the other shoe to drop and then she says "no contract, cancel anytime. Thank you for calling." And that was it. Less than five minutes on the phone and she just gave me all the discounts without me having to even ask.
Not sure what is going on in the home internet market but if you have AT&T I would take the time to make a call. Be sure to ask for the Loyalty Department.

Yes they are very good with that - I just upgraded from 50mpbs to 1000mpbs - they brought out the new modem and all
It’s $15 a month less than I was paying
Weird

5 minutes to save a couple hundred bucks? Nah, I’ll just post in this thread instead.

They figure you won't check the bill again closely after that six months for a few years, and they will make it up eventually.

I think I saw it on the Tech Board a few months ago that allowed me to downgrade my gigabit internet down to 50 Mbps then immediately back up to gigabit and my bill dropped $50/mo.
I think it just illustrates how enormous the profit margins are for internet providers.

You can do this once, sometimes twice a year. Especially if you threaten to go to a competitor.

It’s all play money to them. When you get a higher speed at your house it costs the $0 extra. When you change to a slower speed, no change on their end.
They just make up a number and hope you pay it. It’s not tied to anything physical.

Will not be $15 a month
She bumped you from a $79 plan to a "faster" $105 plan. They will apply the $50 "discount" for a total of $55 payment.

No. She read it out to me. $55 is the price after six months of discount. Besides, with no contract if the deal isn't what she said I can just change again.

You need to ask for the mahomes discount. Or tell them that you are fricking Lily as your BFF.

I had a buddy who was complaining a while back about AT&T internet/tv package or whatever doing weird stuff like that, but it somehow was screwing him over in the end so he cancelled. Keep an eye on the bills going forward lol, maybe it was just a good deed, but in this day and age....ehhh idk.

Yep. I always made a habit of keeping track of the promo expirations and would call asking to cancel. Not a single time did they not extend the promo put further. My wife’s company comps our internet because she works from home. I don’t care how much they keep paying, so I have no incentive to worry about it anymore

Ha ! AT&T and Customer Service is an oxymoron. They don’t have a clue. If you don’t get what you want, call back and talk to someone else. They are so bad. So many offer so much more at better pricing.

I wasn't even sure the phone would know that word. It didn't let me down.

Nope. I don't get really pissed over much anymore, but I reserve the right to hate the very existence of AT&T.

And absolutely nothing ties them to deliver that. In fact I highly doubt they will.
