Get clothes. Kids that age don't give a crap. They'll play with anything
Clothes are a horrible idea because they may never wear them and the parents will end up having to either get rid of them or put them in storage.

Give the kid something that he can actually use now.
Like a box of diapers? It will be at least three years before he'll have a birthday he has any recollection of whatsoever. Anything you give him now is to impress the parents.
So give him a bottle of Jim Beam and a Rodan & Fields gift basket.

Our son turned 1 a few weeks ago. This was his favorite gift. Uses it almost every evening. There are several different options and price points.

I certainly don't recommend getting it for friends' children
I only got it for my godson
I'll also get it for my two boys
But I know all 3 of those boys are going to be hunting a fishing so it's worth it

Candlesticks. Maybe a nice place setting.

Set up a hooker encounter for his 18th birthday, and give him the gift certificate today. You could probably get a good deal if you set it up this early.

Awesome, it will be make for great surprise for them when they turn 14.
Not so much when they're 1.

We got my oldest daughter a wagon when she was 1. She loved it and we used it for a really long time. Not sure if the parents would want to have some input into the type of wagon though.

You think that kid will remember whatever you get him beyond the first 40 seconds he sees it? Start setting up today for what he will remember in the future.

you know what makes for a great surprise for my one year old?
When I play fricking peek a boo
He's one. There's no toy you can give him that's he's going to look at you and say "this one, this is the one that is greater than all others. I applaud your efforts sir"

We always went for the fun stuff for our nephew.

They said no gifts, don't feel obligated. I'm thinking maybe a pop up of a classic story.

Offer to babysit for a weekend so mom and dad can get to doing what they used to.

I would like to not show up as a cheap as with a box.
The kid would love it though. I loved boxes when I was 1-3.

Or sidewalk chalk, water guns, soccer ball, fishing pole, toy gun, stuffed animal, musical instrument, toy lawn mower.

What good what that pole be without his fishing license? For life.

Those are all amazing ideas. I assume that is what everyone brings.
