I'm a sucker for books but I also think a wagon or dump truck/tractor is a great idea (boy or girl). My boys even loved the super large legos at that age.

Like others have said, baby doesn't care and will likely be asleep for some portion of the party anyway. Party is really for other people to tell the parents congrats on keeping your kid alive and well for a whole year.
