I'm still jealous as hell of where he lives.

I am truly fortunate, but there are many great places in AK. I agree with Roger that I think Haines would be a great place as well.

In a lot of places you can go from town to off the grid in a few hundred yards. Granted it's not the same as living 20 miles from your nearest neighbor.

This is a guy who really went off the grid LINK

What The Last Frontier family does is pretty much legit, how they live. They probably do some things the hard(er) way for the sake of interest, but that is how they live. They are all fairly well off. Otto is on the state Ag board. One of their sisters runs a large and successful lodge not far from them. Of course, Jewel is the daughter of Atz. They aren't hurting for money, even without the show.

The show is filmed in a way that makes them look more isolated than they are, for sure.

Where their "camp" was located, that's not unusual. The ABC islands (Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof Islands) are home to some of the monster coastal brown bears, and in great numbers.

We had a mauling this weekend in Haines, winter doesn't stop them.

Jewels relatives live not far from Homer, AK. The show they do is a little realistic but they have access to town and a lot of things it has to offer, which is hidden by the show. They probably have power where they are above Katchemak Bay.

Proenneke's cabin (and location) is amazing. It's on my bucket list of places to visit.

Hence the reason why I'm jealous of TimeOutdoors. He lives in the same neighborhood.

It's a 4 million acre neighborhood (wilderness). Dick Proenneke gets all the attention, but there are several people that moved out here post WWII and built cabins. Upper Twin lake, where Dick's cabin is, is great, but to me I would rather explore Kontrashibuna Lake or Upper/Lower Tazimina. You get the same beautiful clear water, but you have better hiking and maybe fishing (Although if you are coming to fish, Lake Clark is where you want to be).

Haines

Isn't that where Parker's (Gold Rush) parents live? Doesn't his dad own a company that specializes in grading for roads?

Twin Lakes area of Lake Clark, which is the best of the National Parks in the state in my opinion.

So Roger, are any of those Alaska shows even remotely real? I posted on the TV board that I do somewhat enjoy those shows, but I'm really skeptical of what level of reality they are.

They’re about as real as Swamp People

Yeah, his Dad owns Southeast Roadbuilders outside of Haines, his grandpa was a legend in that area though. Used to have a lumber mill there.

Porcupine is about 5 miles from the Canadian Border, beautiful area up there.

DD is scripted

Naked and Afraid is the realist.

Wait until the episode that is being filmed in Louisiana right now is released

They tried a few years ago but the participants didn’t last but a few days because of the bugs and mosquitoes

This time around I think they started with 14-20 people. The last time I ran into the medics at the boat landing during hunting season they were down to 4.

I believe it because all it was, was them living their life each day and how they filled their time.

Nah, I know members of the crew and the land owner that is providing his land and support for this most recent show, and I’ve actually been around the producers and it’s not fake or scripted. Yes the cast members are protected and they won’t be in any serious danger, there are some staged shots but they are literally sleeping in the swamp and living off the land every day.
