McKnight also testified Thursday morning at the Louisiana Legislature’s committee on local and municipal affairs about the proposed SB 470, which would change the makeup of the BREC board. The bill, sponsored by State Sen. Regina Barrow- D-Baton Rouge, would increase the number of BREC board members and add more north Baton Rouge representation.

“It’s really important that the individuals who represent this area have a voice at the table,” Barrow said. “The zoo is one issue, but it’s not the only issue.”

Current BREC Commission:

BREC Superintendent:

Chairman:

Vice-Chairman:

Treasurer:

Remaining Commissioners:

In short:
The Zoo isn’t moving
Tax payers just added on 2 more salaried employees to fit the bill for
Any and all BREC spending will be North of Florida Blvd going forward

The fact that a person from Lake Charles or Ruston or Houma can vote to determine the board of a Baton Rouge recreation organization is exactly what's wrong with this state. frick this place.

Why wasnt this brought up last year or forever ago?

On one hand, I want the city to improve by building a new zoo, but on the other hand, I would like to see them leave it there, pump a bunch of money in it and people still dont go.

frick them

Representative Barrow is like a 4 year old who didn't get her way. She is throwing a tantrum and trying to add positions to the board that she can control to affect the zoo vote. Believe me, North Baton Rouge doesn't contribute near as much to the BREC slush fund as South Baton Rouge yet North BR should be the ones who get to make the decision. A complete joke.

Here's a novel idea.

Why don't we let EBR parish figure this out and who should serve on this commission? Why is the state involved at all?

When we blow up the constitution, we need to restore all these boards and commissions to local or regional control.

As usual, the best and the brightest seek these sorts of positions.

I think the zoo needs to stay in NBR because it's a colossal waste of money to move it. That being said, the fact that state representatives can use the muscle of the state to dictate who is on the board of something like BREC is fricking draconian.

If the bill passes, then there needs to a serious effort to not renew any BREC taxes and there are a bunch of them.

If the state wants representation, the state can pay for the cost.

If it stays in NBR and they spend 100 million to renovate it, I see it as a bigger waste of money.

Tbh, I dont think they get the money they need to renovate it if it stays there. Too much donated money is only going to be given unless it moves. Big time donors arent donating for it to stay there

I use my BREC Park five days a week . I even clean it myself when I see crap in it . That’s how much I love my BREC Park. The only time I ever had an issue ( safety ) I called and left a message, they called me back within the hour and fixed it within three hours . It’s like the only thing in Baton Rouge that works and one of the few quality of life aspects of living here.

I can totally see them screwing this up.

If it stays there, they should get a one time lump sum of $25 million to use on renovations/improvements. Next, the millage for BREC should be cut 75% and they should start tapping into those massive reserves to supplement their yearly budget.

Yea thats not going to renovate much for them. I think they want 90 to 100 million for a renovation.

About the only enclosure that is on par with what a brand new zoo would bring is the tiger exhibit.

If the cost of renovating the zoo is roughly on par with building a new one in an area that will get more traffic, why renovate?

I don’t necessarily agree with building a new zoo but I see putting nearly $100m into the current zoo as a massive waste of money because there won’t be enough of an increase in visitors.

Move close or renovate? Move.

Move or close? Move.

Renovate or close? Close if the difference is $100m. Closer to $20m and we can talk.
