Nature: Cochrane Collaboration (evidence-based) rife with "top-down authoritarian culture"

NEWS 17 SEPTEMBER 2018
UPDATE 17 SEPTEMBER 2018 CORRECTION 19 SEPTEMBER 2018
Mass resignation guts board of prestigious Cochrane Collaboration
Governing board of the evidence-based medicine group may now be dissolved entirely.
quote:
The board of the Cochrane Collaboration, a prestigious group that reviews health evidence, has been reduced from 13 to 6 members, following a controversial vote to expel a member for the first time in its 25-year existence.
On 14 September, Peter Gøtzsche, director of the Cochrane’s Nordic centre and a member of its governing board, posted a statement on the centre’s website announcing that he had been expelled as a member of the Cochrane Collaboration, after a vote by 6 of 13 of the board’s members.
quote:
Gøtzsche says that no justification was given for the expulsion but that he was accused by the board of bringing the organization into “disrepute”. The organization — which carries out systematic reviews of health-care interventions — told Nature it had received “numerous complaints” about Gøtzsche after the publication earlier this year of a critique he co-authored, entitled ‘The Cochrane HPV vaccine review was incomplete and ignored important evidence of bias’ and published in the BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine.
quote:
Gøtzsche’s statement says that there is a “growing top-down authoritarian culture and an increasingly commercial business model” taking root at Cochrane that “threaten the scientific, moral and social objectives of the organization”?. He has also been an outspoken critic of Cochrane’s relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. (Cochrane’s policies state that its reviews cannot be “funded or conducted by commercial sponsors or commercial sources with a real or potential vested interest in the findings of a specific review”.)
David Hammerstein Mintz, a board member who stepped down in protest, said some members thought that Gøtzsche’s critical views of Cochrane were “disloyal”. (Nature has approached the collaboration for comment on these points and is awaiting its response.) “It might have been a headache, but the harm done by expelling Peter is much greater than any inconvenience caused by scientific debate,” he says.

Meet the world’s most powerful doctor: Bill Gates
The software mogul’s sway over the World Health Organization spurs criticism about misplaced priorities and undue influence.

Some billionaires are satisfied with buying themselves an island. Bill Gates got a United Nations health agency in Geneva. Over the past decade, the world’s richest man has become the World Health Organization’s second biggest donor, second only to the United States and just above the United Kingdom. This largesse gives him outsized influence over its agenda, one that could grow as the U.S. and the U.K. threaten to cut funding if the agency doesn’t make a better investment case.
quote:
Already a decade ago, when Gates started throwing money into malaria eradication, top officials — including the chief of the WHO’s malaria program — raised concerns that the foundation was distorting research priorities. “The term often used was ‘monopolistic philanthropy’, the idea that Gates was taking his approach to computers and applying it to the Gates Foundation,” said a source close to the WHO board.
quote:
The billionaire was the first private individual to keynote WHO’s general assembly of member countries, and academics have coined a term for his sway in global health: the Bill Chill. Few people dare to openly criticize what he does. Most of 16 people interviewed on the topic would only do so on the condition of anonymity. “He is treated liked a head of state, not only at the WHO, but also at the G20,” a Geneva-based NGO representative said, calling Gates one of the most influential men in global health.
quote:
However, his sway has NGOs and academics worried. Some health advocates fear that because the Gates Foundation’s money comes from investments in big business, it could serve as a Trojan horse for corporate interests to undermine WHO’s role in setting standards and shaping health policies.
quote:
But the foundation’s focus on delivering vaccines and medicines, rather than on building resilient health systems, has drawn criticism. And some NGOs worry it may be too close to industry. In January, 30 health advocacy groups penned an open letter to WHO’s executive board protesting against making the Gates Foundation an official partner of the agency because its revenue comes from investments in companies that are at odds with public health goals, such as Coca-Cola.
quote:
“I don’t think they have any bad intentions. They are just such a big player that as immediately as they put money down they can disrupt things,” said one Geneva-based diplomat.
“As far as I can tell, people are really happy with anyone who is giving money,” said another.

To be fair, when you get it from a reliable source like WorldStar you expect 100% truth.
Who would you trust to be more accurate if both were to report on the same story, WorldStar or CNN?

What no Bill-Gates-is-the-Devil nut job can ever explain to me is what his end game is. We’re talking about a retirement age mega billionaire who has more money than he could spend in 30 lifetimes, who gives away billions and of dollars to charity feeding Africans and investing in education, and science and technology. Like, what’s his motive behind vaccine development? To become a bigger mega billionaire? For what? What could he then buy that he can’t buy now? And if he’s running a massive evil plot to take over the world, shouldn’t he hurry up? He’s 64. I mean, what’s the point of ruling the planet like an evil dictator if you’re wearing depends and can’t get your dick hard anymore.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not down with globalism. I like my small town American life and my assortment of firearms and getting to play golf and go fishing when I want. I like that my town isn’t overrun with immigrants who smell like curry and shite. And there are things I disagree with Bill Gates on but I just don’t see that nerd as the evil puppet master pulling the strings.
