We don't have more Nuclear energy because of this attitude. Nuclear power is safe if you don't build it on the coast of an island on a fricking fault line.

And the real killer, in spite of the primary failing, the back up failing, the back up back up failing, they still had over a day to try to regain control of the situation. It only failed because the plug in interface for external mobile generators couldn’t be used due to it being fricking under ground level and flooded, and while the grid can work like that, the junction cables couldn’t.
They were trying to make an improvised tie in when the rods melted through.

Holy shite that’s bad engineering. You guys are talking about Fukushima?
Honestly, it amazes me that there’s not more public support behind depleted uranium reactors considering all of the problems they solve - CO2 generation, nuclear waste disposal, reduced risk of nuclear proliferation, etc.

What what?
Depleted uranium is a by product of the same technology to make weapons grade uranium. It doesn’t reduce nuclear proliferation risk at all.
What you are wanting to look at is thorium reactor technology. Which is better across the board for civil energy generation but because it can’t easily be integrated in a nuclear weapons infrastructure it has been left neglected.
There are indications we can use seed thorium reactors with existing waste to “burn it up” as well, changing it from a half-life of 250k years to one of merely 500.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the risks, but one of the arguments I hear against the use of small nuclear reactors in developing nations is that there’s the risk of bad actors getting their hands on fissile material. Presumably using depleted uranium instead of enriched uranium is beneficial from this standpoint?

In practice however, how many countries will willingly allow their entire electrical infrastructure be reliant on other countries’ delivery of fuel?
