My BIL is in for the holidays and we were talking about work stuff and he says he's trying to figure out if he should get a degree.

It'd likely be in business administration or marketing, something like that just to kind of check that box.

He has a pretty good position now and a decent resume with several management roles (actual business experience, not like managing fast food or a dollar store in high school). He's somewhat intelligent and well spoken, he says he interviews well and that his current position "preferred" a bachelor's yet he still was hired.

He and my sister have no kids and are doing pretty well financially so it wouldn't be a huge deal for him to go at night or online if he were to do so.

He's 30 if that matters, not really in outside sales but a lot of his experience lines up with territory management (established client relationship) type roles.

Is it worth getting a degree in something vague like business administration just to check that box on an application these days?

It is never a bad thing to have a business degree.

I would never waste time on 130 credit hours that doesn't lead to a defined skill/trade/certification at that age. It's a waste.

That time was lagniappe in his 20s to waste on junk degrees. I know. I have one.

I always suggest people get a degree if for nothing else but the pride you receive in obtaining one, and it's something a company can never hold against you.

There are some very legitimate online programs now that are on par with in-person courses. If going the online route, go to a university with a legitimate physical presence. Don't get a degree from some bullshite online degree mill.

I have been on the hiring side with "bachelors preferred"... I did not care about the degree and HR just ran through whoever you picked. I was also on the side of HR sending me someone to work for me just because they had a degree but no relevant experience and they mostly turned out awful.

A degree can open doors but IMO a Business administration or marketing degree is pretty much worthless.

Does he have any credits or would he be starting from zero? The latter would be tough but bows the time to do it if he’s going to do so.

He really needs to have an honest discussion with himself on what his goals are if the degree will help him get there.

There are grants and stuff that help adults go back. A lot of companies pay for school. Maybe he should start looking for jobs he wants and see the requirements.

If he’s going to continue working for larger companies, yes he should do it. That’s a big check Mark to go along with his others. He might not even be looked at for certain jobs without it, even having all the real world experience. It’s dumb but it’s that way a lot of places.

That's his thought process, wants to do it now if he's going to do it.

Just doesn't know if it's worth the time, effort, and money.

Then why does he feel he needs a degree? Is there a position higher than what he has that he can't officially obtain without one? Or is there concern that if he tries to leave the business for something else that not having the degree to check the box will hold him back?

If I didn't need the degrees I have to do what I do, I wouldn't have gotten at least two of them.

Hard to understand this mindset, especially for an investment of $50-100k of real money, time, effort.

Treat a degree like the investment it is and will pay dividends for a very long time. Coincidentally, a business degree will teach this.
