Biking 30 miles in sept and need advice

I know 30 miles is not that long in the biking world, but it's something I've been working up too. Anyway, was wanting to know what should I bring with me to eat (if anything at all)? I'm thinking it should take me 2.5 to 3 hrs to finish and was contemplating bringing a cliff bar or those energy gels for along the way. Any help would be appreciated

When I do 40 mile rides, I'll eat an energy bar or gel right around the start and then again half-way.
I've also got 2 water bottles on the bike. One with water and the other with water/Gatorade mixed

Bottle of water's all you'll need. Good for you, by the way.

What else have you been doing?

Thanks. I'll have a camel back with me with water stations every 8 miles. I should be good to go on water.

A couple of Powerade bottles should be fine, although a snack of your choice wouldn't hurt. I happen to like pretzels (the salt is nice) but you could go with whatever power bar you happen to like. It's a pretty personal choice, you learn by experiment.
For longer distances you'll want something more substantial than pretzels, but for 30 miles you just need something to keep you from being hungry.

30 is a lot. I like a good 15-20 mile ride.

30 miles or less, I only bring water. Over 30 miles, I eat a cliff bar or a piece of fruit every hour even if I'm not hungry.
I ride 12-18 miles 6 days a week, 20-40 miles about once a month, and 50-80 miles a few times a year.

I am actually starting to get into bike riding. I love the excercise and scenery. Gyms get pretty boring to me but anyway looking for a new bike for a novice bike rider. Anyone have any suggestions? Looking to spend between $200-$400.

If you're doing one of th de Tour de Cure type rides they should have food stops along the route. Assuming they have one for the 30 mile route you should be fine just drinking Gatorade and maybe a clif bar, banana, snickers, pb&j inscrutable, peanut butter crackers, etc.
In September with the heat, hydration will be key...depending on how much you weigh aim for about 30oz an hour (150-180lbs) or 40oz over say 180lbs.
But okay with it and experiment during training and see what you like and what sits well.

I've done several centuries and find the best thing for me has been peanut butter and honey sandwiches. Bonk breakers are ok too. I like plain ole bananas as well. Screw those cliff bars. For 30, I wouldn't bring much-- eat a little before and you should be good.

I'll tell you what I did, and maybe that'll help. I piddled around a few bike shops in NYC, and in each shop I found the second least expensive men's bike I could find. Once I found one that I liked, I bought it. It was a smidge under $500, which is cheap as hell up here. I imagine you'll find something serviceable in the upper $300's.
Getting a bike was one of the best decisions I ever made. I eat and drink whatever I want, and I'm not gonna get fat as long as I stay on this thing.

If it's just biking a nothing else a cliff bar will easily be enough. When I'd train for the half Ironman I wouldn't eat anything during 30 mile training sessions. Also I bet you do it a lot faster than 2.5 to 3 hrs if you are really working towards it. Unless you're riding a mountain bike or taking on serious hills, it's not hard to maintain 15 mph on flay terrain. Good luck.

I would definitely try a energy gel/chewable prior to the ride and see if your stomach will even take it on multiple rides. Follow with a swig of water for both kinds. For example: I love Gu gels/ Gu chewables/ Skratch Chewables, but other brands don't like to sit still inside of me.
I sometimes like to even have a Snickers bar or Coke handy (>60 miles rides usually).
As for liquids, water should be fine for that distance. Again, if you're using sports drinks, try it on a ride before you ride with it. Gatorade is fine for me playing other sports, but during a bike ride/ triathlon I've found the stuff congeals on the edges of my mouth. Not for me. I use Skratch which has almost no calories, sugars, or carbs, but supplies necessary salts. Super easy on the stomach too.
Trial and error!

Makes sense. At any rate, 30 miles isn't really enough where you must have solid fuel but it can be nice to have. Or just have a sandwich before heading out and another sandwich waiting for you when you're done.
