A pool 1000x over. A boat has resale, a pool doesn't. That should be the end of the argument because you are only asking which is a bigger waste of money and to go any further would depend on type of boat and what costs you consider. If you add the fuel to run the boat, all the fishing gear needed to fish, bait, etc, the boat will probably end up costing more than how much you would spend to maintain your pool.
If you want a pool, I think it makes way more sense to join a club that has a pool and pay the 25k initiation/stock fee and the 600/mth dues. If you figure the 100/mth energy bill plus the 2k/ year maintenance, it would take you 13.7 years before owning the pool was cheaper. All the while, you could have enjoyed a golf course, gym, and private dining with your family.

Is this true? I know you don't get your investment back, but I've never heard of a pool bringing the value down.

It doesn't bring value down necessarily but it does shrink your market. There are more people looking for a house without a pool rather that with a pool.

Is there anything that is not a waste of money according to the OT
Going on vacations are a waste of money
Playing golf is a waste of money
Joining a CC Club is a waste of money
Riding in a Mardi Gras parade is a waste of money
Hunting and fishing is a waste of money
Going to a sporting event is a waste of money
I don't find any form of leisure (or general purchase) to inherently be a waste of money. It's not my job to know what you can and can't afford.

Cant go back in time and buy more family time with money you've saved.

Pools are trouble.
If you have big bucks for pool join country club.
Boat. Was just with cousins at family reunion. They talked about learning to water ski at our place on Kentucky lake.

No they aren't.
Work?
Yes, trouble? Nah.
Key is to not build a huge one.
Smaller is justvas enjoyable and far less maintenance involved and time consuming.

Pool if you're going to build it, it's not a good investment.
Find a house that already has one.

I'd say the pool.
It's easier to get rid of a boat.
Filling a pool with cement would proably cost 10's of thousands.

After I bought my 29ft boat the wife put in for a pool. Being the loving husband I am I went and purchased the nicest little blue pool you've ever seen. Brings joy seeing her out on the deck sitting in it.

We use our pool every chance we get. The kids have swam in it for the last couple weeks freezing their asses off but they love it. I have maybe spent $100 on it the last year or so. Its salt so the maintence is very small. Can’t speak for the boat but my dad and brothers have boats and I don’t hear them complaining about them ever. They use them all the time also.

I spent $50k on a bass boat and it's been worth every penny as I'm on the water 2-3 days a week and that is what I enjoy doing and have the funds to afford it.

I wouldn't spend money on either, but I'd personally say a pool is a bigger waste of money. How many people do you know that are practically begging others to use their pool?

I can't catch speckled trout out of my pool.

Doesn't a pool add to the resale value of your house? I guess this makes sense if you don't ever plan on moving.
