I respectfully disagree, Atlanta has Downtown with a lot to do and (reviving even more). Midtown has many nice restuarants shopping Atlantic Station, bars, lounges, clubs. Buckhead has world class shopping, living, restaurants. Sandy Springs, Perimeter very nice areas all within the city. Suburbs left off list they're VERY nice!(over that crap though).
1. Las Vegas
2. Miami Beach
3. New Orleans
4. New York City
5. Chicago
6. Los Angeles
7. Austin
8. San Francisco
9. San Diego
10. Houston
Shopping (and this is before River Oaks District opened):
1. New York City
2. Chicago
3. San Francisco
4. Minneapolis
5. Los Angeles
6. Boston
7. Houston
8. Honolulu
Best Foodie Cities:

14. Nashville
15. Philadelphia

Most major entertainment acts and artist of all genres perform here constantly.
quote:It gets hot in Atlanta too. The downtown area is undergoing revitalization to make it a more urban center, which it hasn't been in the past. And Galveston is a nice little beach town just 40 minutes down the road. The closest beach to Atlanta is over 4 hours away in another state
Houston= super hot, flat land, bland downtown, suburban sprawl,Galveston for a beach. Hurricanes and endless flooding. NOT!

Rare natural weather events are a fact of life in most places.
Miami has hurricanes. Los Angeles has earthquakes. New York has snowstorms/blizzards.

Houston
GA-"Combined state and local sales taxes in the Peach State average 6.97%, 23rd highest in the country. The state's top marginal income tax rate of 6% is 20th highest, while its bottom rate of 1% is 15th lowest."
TX-Texas does not have state income tax.
Both have similar amenities as far as sports teams/music.
Atlanta is a prettier town,
Houston is a better city for a career (in general).
Houston has more international diversity.
Houston has a better food scene.
Atlanta doesn't have hurricanes.
Atlanta is closer to Bama.
Houston is closer to College Station.
Not that I go shopping often,

Galveston is terrible.

Tybee Island is less than four hours away and in Georgia. Tybee Island is far better than fricking Galveston.

The OP's question can only be answered via food fight.
Houston BBQ >>>>>>> Atlanta.
(Dallas does have Pecan Lodge and Hutchins so I'll give'em that. And Burger King began in Miami.)
Houston is closer to good fishing (Matagorda, Port Aransas) than Atlanta.

Fox Bros BBQ, in Atlanta, owned by Texans who now live in Atlanta is better than any BBQ that I've had in Texas and I lived there for five years. Those fat (400 pound +) boys know how to smoke some meat.

For every Fox Brothers (never eaten there), there's probably a half of dozen joints Houston as good or better (and more on the way, e.g., Truth BBQ out of Brenham).

quote:Galveston is a cool little town. But if we're mentioning beaches that are 4 hours away, there are other beaches I could name like Padre Island. Or tack on a couple more hours, because why not we're already mentioning places 4 hours away, and why not just go to Gulf Shores?

They have some of them. These they don't have:
Baanou, Baccarat, Bonpoint, Chopard, Dolce & Gabbana, Eres, Forty Five Ten, Harry Winston, Jo Malone, John Hardy, John Lobb, Kiton, Patek Philippe, Roller Rabbit, Roberto Cavalli, Saint Bernard, St. Nicola, Stella McCartney, Thornwood Gallery, Van Cleef & Arpels, Vilebrequin
Without checking them, I can tell you ATL has at least 6 of these on your list that you claim they dont have. come on now

And you're acting like Atlanta has had something similar forever... most of those really high end shops in Atlanta are at The Shops Buckhead which opened at the end of 2014 Some stores like Tom Ford and Dior just opened in 2016.
And it seems to be struggling:
What? Now this is comical, so you claim they dont have them, but yes they do and have had them for a while now, so that is a bad thing
keep those goalpost moving...

Houston and everything around it is a shithole.
Atlanta is pretty bad, but at least they have north Georgia in the vicinity, it wins easy.

Aren't most high-end luxury retailers struggling as of late? Seems like the millennial aren't going for the higher end things.

Pretty much, millennials in general seem to favor experiences vs things when it comes to their spending.

I like Houston a little better than Atlanta these days. Atlanta is a prettier area, but the city has lost its identity and its suburbs are too crowded.
I would say I still like Atlanta better, but this is an accurate post.
Lived in ATL for 10 years and now BR for 10 years.
So ATL > Houston > BR > Nola
