Do you know of anyone who actually feel for this hustle/scam in New Orleans? Common sense says don’t say anything and keep walking but I could see some one with an outgoing personality engaging with the guy.

I always give them a $1 so they don’t get beat when they get back to the orphanage.

Some are pretty clever.

I'm sure there are tons of people that fell for it and then just laughed and kept on walking without paying.

We call those people knife/gunshot victims.

I fell for it many years ago. Gave the kid his money. We've had 20 plus years of laughs over it.

So what.

My dad fell for it when I was a kid, but then the dude said Bourbon and we were on Royal.

He tried to argue, but we laughed and walked off. We didn’t try to collect.

It’s a riddle used as a test to determine if the person is a tourist or a local. Thiefs and swindlers in New Orleans typically prefer not to target locals. Locals know the answer to the riddle, so they won’t be messed with. Tourists have no idea, which reveals them to be tourists and eligible for being pillaged by the local hoodlums.
