Go to a range and rent a few guns to try. It won’t take long to learn what you like or don’t like.

Highly recommend having her test a version of what she wants first.

yeah, thats what I was thinking but to be honest I have been too lazy to research how to go about it. I didnt want to seem like an idiot at a range or in a class like I was asking where the basement was at the Alamo.

Absolutely won’t.

Start with a safety course at a range with a certified instructor. Fire a lot of types of guns. Find what works for you. Reinforce and refresh safety measures at all times.

Never worry about this. If it’s a decent establishment, they are there to teach and you aren’t the first who felt clueless, nor will you be the last.

A well-run place will try their best to make you comfortable and retain you as a customer.

That has been my experience.

I have a 357 but my wife wants something a little smaller but isn't sure what.

You can shoot .38 Special in a .357. Less than half the recoil and flash. FWIW, it is orders of magnitude more difficult to shoot a small handgun over a larger one. Greater recoil, smaller grip, less sight radius, smaller sights, etc. One of the most common mistakes is to give a small woman a small handgun. Don't do that.

Take a gun building class at a local shop. It’s a good time.

Congrats to you for realizing you need to increase your knowledge and skill. Too many folks handle firearms in an unsafe manner.

Yep, best way to find what works for you. The educational side is available on the internet, lots of good short videos showing the workings of firearms, etc Take a class for handgun safety and accuracy.

Depends on the class and instructor. Too many try hard, I would have joined but types in the gun industry these days.

Thanks for the responses everyone (and the jokes), this is good stuff!

Taking a course seems to make a lot of sense. I’m in the Northern part of Metro ATL so I think there are a lot of instructors/ranges, I’ll use the info in this thread to find one.

Like a couple of other people have said, I’ve recently felt a little silly not knowing stuff that seems to be basic so glad I’m not alone…wouldn’t feel comfortable owning one only knowing “pull trigger, bullets come out”
