it's an ongoing fight with my 6 year old that's in kindergarten because he's the one bullying

what works best is to just tell him he won't have any friends acting like that

Kind of useless to the OP, but I teach my son to be the anti-bully. Befriend the kids without much social skills. Watch out for kids picking on the really little ones. Step in and stop it.

Picked my son up a few weeks ago and he told me he pushed a kid off the swing. Why? He said because he pushed a pre-k kid off the swing first to get it.

Lil man got an ice cream cone.

I was bullied in kindergarten by this kid named Joey. Everyday, walking to the bus, he would push me down, and I would skin my knee, and my Empire Strikes Back lunchbox would fly open and mess up the matching thermos.

My grandma told me that next time I saw Joey walking up to me, to punch him as hard as I could in the face. If he doesn't run away, keep punching him until he does run away.

The next day as Joey approached me, I reared back and punched him in the face. He burst into tears and ran off. Joey never bothered me again.

I don't know if this story helps you, but I like telling it because it makes me feel like a 5 year old badass.

that's a tuff call

finding a balance between getting him too aggressive or too passive

if he tells teacher, then he learns to be a tattle-tale and depend on others to cover his butt.

I'd find a way to get him to defend himself but not punch first

Reading this thread makes me think I'm the only dad in the world who wrestles and fights with his kids.

Play fight obviously.

My niece (kindergarten) was being bullied on her bus by another girl on the bus (2/3rd grader). The girl was taking my nieces snack every morning and eating it.

When my cousin found out, he put ghost pepper shavings in the snack and told his daughter not to touch it, "this is for the bully".

Later that day, the school called to ask my cousin about it. He told them, "this was the bullies problem not his. His daughter likes hot food. If the bully doesn't like hot food, she should stay away."

Principle thanked him for his time and that bully hasn't been a problem since.

Having a similar issue with my son.
He's in pre-k and just about every day he tells me about a couple of kids pushing him down and calling him stupid and other little kid insults.

We talked to the teacher and she basically said that they hadn't seen anything like that. My wife and I don't know what to think. He's not usually one for embellshing details and some of the things he says are very specific.

We've told him to tell a teacher every single time. Maybe we'll instruct him to handle it differently when he's older, but at 4 years old, I don't want him trying to navigate that kind of stuff.

Just tell on them until they realize it's too annoying getting questioned by a teacher to keep bullying.
