Full blown Ford Explorer by far

Rav4 Plugin Hybrid.
Very good product.
But same transitional product dilemma as the Chevy Volt from 8-10 years ago IMO. It makes me wonder why those buyers didn’t just go full electric unless they live or work in a remote area. They can probably get a lot more range if the car isn’t carrying around a heavy gas engine, gas tank, and transmission that is rarely used. Or Toyota could have just added more battery and deleted the gas motor entirely.
Toyota has a new EV coming out soon. Similar in size as the Model Y EV and the Rav 4 Plug In Hybrid. The Lexus version will probably compete with the Cadillac Lyriq, Audi E-tron, and that Jaguar E-Pace thingy.

Good grief, why?
The latest redesign has been extremely unreliable and has by far the worst interior in that market segment. It’s at if Ford intentionally build that thing to be a government fleet car.
Toyota Highlander and the new Nissan Pathfinder are both much better in every way. I wouldn’t touch the Explorer until they refresh the design. And even then I would buy the extended warranty.

I would go all out for $65k and get the "pre-owned" Range Rover Autobiography Large model. There should be a 2010 or 2011 model available somewhere for this price.

Get a Mazda CX-5 and you'll still have $40k left over for strippers and blow.
This is the right answer. I've been surprised by the mazda I drive to work.
Traditional auto trans (no dual clutch or CVT nonsense to go out early), naturally aspirated engine...should be more reliable and long lasting that most.
I've put 100k on a 2016 mazda sedan commuting...not a single item, warranty or otherwise...not even a bulb has gone out.
A step up would be the CX-9. I think it comes with a turbo.

My work provides a Ford Escape suv - it’s not bad, it’s free. I think they are around $24,000.
I put about 50k miles per year in it. It’s holds up.
I got upgraded from a Focus (FML) to an Escape for a work car and i really don’t hate it.
I think you could get it fully loaded with every bell and whistle for less than $30k. Maybe not in today’s market.
The thing that impresses the hell out of me is MPG. Ecomode (or Greta-mode as my kids call it) can get about 35-40 mpg on the highway. Sport mode is fairly zippy

This.
Wife’s (no pics of her) is a loaded-out ‘17, it now has 65k miles on it, zero issues so far.
It allegedly seats 5 persons but I wouldn’t want to be in the rear middle seat for a long time.
Barring accident, we’ll keep it at least 5 more years.
NXs for the US market are built in Japan.
I really wanted the NX to work for us, but the backseat was just too small. My son is 6'2" and my daughter is almost 6'. They were cramped back there on the test drive.
I will be looking at one in a couple of years when it's time to get me a new car.

Here is what the rest of the world gets...the LC Prado instead of the huge grilled Lexus GX front end.

Edit: I see a lot of people don’t know what a “small” SUV is.

One of the Fütlets is 6’ 4”, he’s not allowed in the back seat of the NX.

Another vote for Subaru Outback and it’s much cheaper than you’re max
If you want to spend 60k then go with anything made by Toyota. The Porsche macan is certainly worth consideration but getting in under 60k after all of the add ons could be tough

I also have a volt.
I think plug-ins actually should be the focus over full electric ... for now. The reason being is that I do a lot of long range trips. Electric, even if you have a tesla, is just not there yet.
With the plugin hybrid rav4, I can go to work, the store, normal stuff without ever getting gas. I can also tow the boat from Mandeville to Venice without worry.
Nothing else can do that.

after driving a focus for work for 8 years and hating every second of it, i can assure you that:
this
is a whole bunch better than
i'm not madly in love with the escape or anything. the focus just sucked that much.
i will say that i had a kia k5 as a rental in between and if i was going to to get a lower mid-range sedan, i would jump on that one in a heart beat. again... it's a work car that i'm not paying for. that's a whole different beast than what i'd buy personally.

You can get a bigger Audi or Acura MDX for that money . I would stay away from Infiniti . Mine had all kinds of problems
