Best Skiing in the Appalachians

I lived near the Cascades for the past two years and just recently moved to Kentucky. All I keep hearing is how there is "no good skiing" this side of the Mississippi.
I know there's nothing like out west, but I'm looking for the best spots to grab some powder so my form doesn't get rusty.
Any suggestions? I've heard Snowshoe, WV is pretty legit...

For the area, Snowshoe is as good as it gets.
I like Sugar Mt as well.
However, I was spoiled by Utah last year and now I'm afraid that East Coast skiing will be wildly disappointing going forward.

I've always wanted to try Sugarloaf, ME or Stowe, VT.

True Story, I have only ever skied at Uber Gatlinburg.

The only time I have ever skied was at Beech Mountain, NC. It seemed fine to me but I have nothing to compare it to.

There really isn't any serious skiing in the East, unless the conditions are ideal, which doesn't always occur.
But if you were to choose, I'd head to Killington, VT or one of those in that area. Snowshoe, WV is surprisingly good for the southern Appalachians, but still pales to the Rockies or Sierras.
Skip any of the NC ski areas, unless you are in the area.
And of course there is Cloudmont, Alabama.

I used to be obsessed with SkiNC.com and Rays Weather (currently skisoutheast)...Cloudmont opens up every five years or so?
There are several in Virginia and WV worth going to, and about 3 or 4 in NC. It just depends on what kind of season they're having.

Whereabouts in Kentucky?
If you're close enough to get there, Perfect North Slopes, just outside Lawrenceburg, Indiana is a great place (for the midwest). Crowded on weekends though - it pulls people from Indy, Cinci, Louisville, Lexington, Columbus, and I've run into people doing a weekend from Nashville, and one guy from Alabama.
It's small, of course, but they handle man-made snow better than anyone; if it's been cold for a couple of days, you'll have good skiing. If you can get there during the week, it's a great day (I take vacation days all winter and get there at least once a week).
Super nice family owns it, they plow money into improvements every summer, great staff, always a good time.

Banner Elk is the little town outside Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain Resort

Sugar is a mess on weekends. Hour long lift lines.
Go to Snowshoe on the 2 days it snows. Otherwise skip it. IF you skied in the Cascades, you'll be severely underwhelmed. I skied Snowshoe last year on 40" over 2 days, and it was great.
Locals at Snowshoe told me Canaan Valley has decent, tree skiing. Snowshoe and canaan are a pITA to get to though. Last 2 hours is on a 1 lane winding road.

Snowshoe is your best bet if you're coming from Kentucky but if you're heading there on the weekends be prepared to wait in crazy long lift lines. 30-45 minute waits are not unheard of on holiday weekends. Snowshoe does average well over 100" of snow a year even in bad years and 1500 ft of drop isnt bad for the mid atlantic/south east. I know a couple back country spots in WV but you have to hike and chase the powder. There are also a couple other resorts that I know of that have super low traffic and good snow but it would be a further drive for you.

Heard of Canaan Valley in WVa?
LINK
But the general takeaway is the no ski areas east of the Rockies are like the West.
Dog =/= Cat

Did Killington college week one January. Had a blast. It was more challenging with a good beer buzz. Would go again.

The weather is so unpredictable in North Carolina. I don't think Beech or Sugar had snow/consistent cold temps until mid to late January. I remember seeing pics of people skiing in shorts and tshirts with green grass outside of the slopes.
