I read somewhere that Lincoln didn't want the issue of succession going to the Supreme Court because it is believed the south might have won the case to succeed from the union. Lincoln could have wanted a war and probably tried to provoke the south to firing on Fort Sumter. That is just a theory though.

It wasn’t though.

At that time, you could not point to an article in the US Constitution that said anything about secession being illegal.

I'm not saying he was right to do it, I'm simply saying that's what he did. It's easy to say it was wrong in hindsight but you need to put yourself in his position and in the time period he was in.

I agree. Did his actions result in a unified country? Yes. Could it have happened without 600,000 dead? I don't know. I would like to think it most definitely could have. Did Lincoln massively overstep is bounds and duties as POTUS? Again, i'd say yes, but as you said, you have to consider the frame of reference of the time period and the political conditions undergoing the country.

I don't know any nation in human history that tried to succeed without war. No government is going to let millions of tax payer money and other tax revenue separate from a nation. I don't know what the constitution says a bout secession, I guess it no longer matters when a war breaks out. One side fights to keep and the other tries to leave.

Wow, there some people in here losing their shite about something that happened over 150 years ago.

It forever changed the power structure of the country , for the worst. We're still paying for it today.
Becoming more centralized has brought some good and bad to America, but we are probably better for it. Without a centralized government the country would never be the superpower we've been since WW2. We also probably wouldn't have been able to pass important legislation, fight wars effectively, or make it out of the Great Depression. You really think Louisiana on its own as a state would be better off? No, we would be even more 3rd world than we already are. As for if we would be better off if the South won, hell no. American exceptionalism wouldn't exist and more wars would have come to America, definitely by WW1 if not before hand. Also, race relations would probably be a lot worse than they already are.

I'm really sick of seeing Lincoln at the top of these best presidents lists.

Any president that plunges the nation into war because some of its members want to go in a different direction, doesn't deserve best anything.

this website is so unintentionally funny lmao

What if half the country (all coalesced in one general area) wanted out?

Let's say the West Coast wanted to leave because of who was elected.

If Oregon, Washington, and California wanted to leave. First there needs to be county votes for succession. Most likely Northern California, Eastern Washington, and Eastern Oregon counties would choose to stay. Those counties would be turned over to the United States. After that we would access the cost of military bases and material located in the counties that wanted to leave. US would be allowed to remove whatever aircraft, ships, etc. located there. Then a price would be accessed from what military bases that were left and other works that national tax dollars paid for. After that the leaving counties would be required to pay for them over the next decade.

Then I would be fine with those counties going on their way as their own country. Also they would need to have the understanding that borders would be tight to protect ourselves from the flood of illegals they allow into their territory.

If it were that simple there never would have been a war. As someone else pointed out...what national government would just allow half of the nation's economy to up and leave and still be considered legitimate? If 11 states could secede with impunity, what would stop other states from leaving? Before you knew it...there would be no United States, there would be multiple different nations, competing against each other for resources, and fighting wars for those resources and for dominance over a particular region.

Yes or no. Today, if a states were able to decide whether or not slavery was legal.. And there were some states where it was still legal and there were plantations in which humans were being treated as property. You would be okay with that?

Again. Yes or No

You know, I'm pretty thorough and straightforward when I type or talk. The reading comprehension in this state is very poor.

Yes. I love slavery. Slavery is awesome. frick black people, they suck. We should still be able to own slaves. I'm a big racist. I hate women too.

You know I've been on this Earth for almost 40 years and I've never met an actual, true, by the definition racist. But whatever you want to believe, bro. I don't entertain people who make ridiculous accusations like that, anymore. I'd rather spend my time and effort on people who actually want to have an honest conversation.

Apparently, sarcasm is lost on you. I really find it funny that you people really believe they're real actual racist alive today. There are very few in this country.

Do this, go to Southern Poverty Law Centers own website and look up the number of people they claim are affiliated with white nationalist hate groups. As a percentage of the total US population, the number of zeros before you find a positive number would run off your computer screen.
