re: Best Presidents (Happy Presidents Day)

I mean his first post accused Lincoln of being a tyrant
Some of his actions were considered as tyrannical by some. Mobilizing military to enforce laws of the US over the CSA isn't exactly peaceful politics. Now before the idiots chime in, secession, at the time, was not "illegal". There is a bunch of grey area there.
quote:
Did Lincoln abuse the power of his office? Absolutely
And some would call tyrannical.
quote:
He has the company of virtually every single other president there.
Not nearly to the extreme of Lincoln, however.
quote:
Was he in a very precarious situation of trying to keep the country together, not many of which were his doing? Absolutely.
Also agree. I often wonder what would have happened, had the civil war never happened. Would slavery still exist today? I highly doubt it. I think the Union's isolationism of the South would have eventually broken the institution of slavery. However, the Union buying cotton and other goods from the CSA would have made it harder for the CSA to abandon slavery completely.
quote:
And the reality is you can't have any discussion of the Civil War without bringing slavery into it.
Not saying you can't at all. It definitely played a large part.
quote:
Maintaining slavery was the sole reason the Southern states seceded.
I don't know as much about the politics around the civil war as i do, say world war 2. I will say, though, that the idea that every CSA soldier was a slave owning blood thirsty demon is silly. The fact is, slave owners were a small minority of the population of the south. Goods and services produced by slaves, however, was a huge industry in the south. It was free labor. So big of an industry that the union participated by purchasing said goods from the South. But to think that every Confederate soldier fought to keep slavery, an institution run by a wealth minority that enriched mostly themselves, is a bit absurd. I think a lot of the soldiers that fought, fought for their state. Unlike today, state loyalty and pride were a big thing back in the day. Robert E. Lee was offered the commanding position in the Union army, but turned it down to defend Virginia, per many reports.
I do wonder, personally, how things would have ended up without the Civil War, though. Would slavery survive? How different would the landscape look? Would the Confederacy survive? Would the idea of the US have survived, with a split nation? Would the British retake the US with a divided nation?

I appreciate your direction but I mean, it's President's Day and he posted a best presidents list. I can't think of anything more political than posting a list of who the best presidents are. If there was any topic that should be moved to PT...
Yeah these helmet headed presidential scholars took today to spray their glands all over the OT and stink the place up.

Lincoln is both a good and bad president, it just depends on what side of the war you look at. He wanted to preserve the union at all costs and did do both lawful and unlawful means to an end. Desperate calls for desperate measures.
The civil war is the most controversial and interesting war to many today. Debates are still going on if the state's do have the right to succeed or not. More and more information are being dug up that are revealing some ugly truths and some big surprises.
People need to keep in mind that a soldiers desire to fight is not the same as a civilian desire for war. The rich plantation owners desire was to keep laws or any type of taxation from hurting the status and wealth of the well being. Thus it was written in the state's constitution the right to slavery.
During that time, people were a lot more loyal to the state for which they came than today. So when a soldier picks up a weapon to fight, they had different reasons to do so. The union soldiers wanted to preserve the nation. The Confederate soldiers wanted to halt or repeal the advancing army for states rights and that is what they assumed was being told the truth. They had different reasons than the ones who were pulling the strings.
But the blood of 600,000 was shed and it could have been avoided if cooler heads were involved. But since it involved money, unfortunately someone had to die.

These are the sort of discussions that think are really interesting to follow and participate in. But you know, MuH sLaVeRy always seems to get in the way.

This would make a good spin off thread.

For many on both sides, that reason was because they were forced to because of the draft. The desertion rate on both sides was pretty high, and the CSA was so desperate at times soldiers were drafted and sent to battle multiple times.
The Civil War is no different than any other war. Just another rich man's war being fought by the poor man. The motives of the soldiers are pretty irrelevant.

Noticed this within his first year. It's uncanny. Even the way people react to him.

That George Washington routinely got stretched by Kunta Kinte? Yes, we can all agree on that.

And what if all of that was going on in the midst of a civil war where Americans were dying by their thousands and the fate of our Republic was at stake?
If he hadn't taken a firm hand, Maryland would have seceded. If Maryland secedes and joins the Confederacy, the national capital of Washington immediately finds itself more than 70 miles behind enemy lines. If Washington falls to a rebel army, the game is entirely over and the Confederacy wins its independence.
If you are the President of the United States, your first job is to protect the nation and you can't do that when your national capital is within the borders of a hostile nation. He did what he had to do in the moment and left the second-guessing to the historians.
