They're all delicious in my view. Me and my Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier share a bowl of Science Diet adult Chicken and Liver every morning. I usually finish off whatever he doesn't eat. Then, in the afternoon, I'll give him what's left of the pig ear I was gnawing on. If he's still hungry at night, I'll take him to a local taco truck and order him up a couple pounds of carnitas. It does hell to his intenstines, but I see the joy on his face as his heart rate slows and he passes out.

Lots of good suggestions so far.
There is no best kind. Different dogs do well on different foods - just like us humans. The TOTW and other, similarly priced foods mentioned might work for some but I've seen it give a lot of dogs bad diarrhea. Most of the high end dog food is packed with protein that the dog does not need unless it's an athlete. You're just going to have to try different foods and different protein sources to figure out what works for your dog.

It's up to you how well you want to feed your dog but please don't feed him puppy or dog chow, those are filled with cheap crap. Personally I feed mine Blue Wilderness but don't listen to the vets either, they will tell you to feed them Science Diet. The company that produces Science Diet donates alot of money to vet schools to get them to promote their product. You can look at this site which grades the foods based off of their ingredients dog food advisor.

4health dog food from Tractor Supply. I buy the beef and potato #30 bag for 37.99. Gets good ratings on the internet and is way cheaper than other comparable dog foods. Grain free. I have 6 dogs and they all do well on this food.
I was coming in here to post this.
If you check the labels, 4health stuff typically matches protein content and other nutritional value of substantially more expensive brands. Went looking at Tractor Supply for some other brands to compare (Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffalo etc.) and found it. Had never heard of it before that.

Also this. I wouldn't worry too much about a super high protein feed for a spaniel.

This website has awesome info and reviews. You want something grain free. I use taste of the wild.

Thought this was a sham at first like gluten free stuff is among people, but after doing a bit of reading I found that dogs don't have the ability to properly process carbs.
Granted they are dogs and will eat their own turds, you're doing them a favor by spending a little extra to get the grain free non-processed stuff.
The treats are especially bad and it's worth looking at the ingredients as flour, soy, and starch are common in the cheaper ones.

I'm another fan of Fromm. Here's why:
* an American company family owned, the ONLY dog food company that has NEVER had a recall
* all ingredients made in the USA, not China
Dog foods in grocery stores, such as Beneful, all list CORN as the first ingredient. Corn is what is fed to pigs and cows to fatten them for slaughter, not to nourish them. sure they supplement with synthetic vitamins and chemicals but it is the equivalent of feeding your child nothing but popcorn and a multi-vitamin every day of their life. I look for the first 2 ingredients to be meat or meat meal, (NOT by-products) MUST be made in the USA for me.
Sure, we all know of a dog who lived 17 years on cheap food just as we know people who eat terribly and drink heavily and live to be 100...but that is the anomaly not the norm. Unless you believe nutrition plays ZERO role in a person's (or dog's) health, we should do what we can to feed our bodies and our dogs' bodies healthy foods.
