You need to figure out how to secure it from the kids. This is where a pistol would be easier. I have two kids and they know how to shoot.

I keep most of my guns (before my boating accident) in an 800 lb Liberty safe that's anchored to my slab and a pistol in a biometric pistol safe in my nightstand. My kids would never touch a gun without me present but I can't say the same for their friends. Better safe than sorry.

that 870 looks like a bad arse. Will put that one on the list.

You’ve gotten that and you’ve gotten The Judge already. They ARE the list. Unless you are confined for space. Or just want a handgun for shot capacity. God forbid anything ever happened but if you had to fire it’s all gonna be over in 3 seconds. Bad guy will be dead or badly wounded, you’ll be dead or badly wounded, or a window or doorway is blown to shite and bad guys are running like scalded dogs.

If you are Walter White and fighting skin heads with military training though you may need to up your game. If you’re on here asking advice, mine would be to pay them and leave town. Lol

Glock 17

ETA: Shotgun is "safer" if you're worried about wall penetration

I like my FNS 45. Put a good and bright gun light on the under rail and have it convenient to pull out if needed.

For the OP, a longer gun is easier to aim. Small movements in a handgun move the round easily 3 feet at a short distance. That's the difference between hitting the target and flying one out the window at the neighbor's house.

No matter what gun you buy, take it to the shooting range and learn to use it. If you buy a shotgun, you should get good at skeet. If you can hit a small moving target, you can hit a target standing still easily.

Speaking of Breaking Bad, how about the revolver Walt uses? He used a Ruger LCR .38 special, but it also comes is .22 magnum. That seems like a good home defense gun. Simple, compact, easy to handle, not much kick and good stopping power..

This is actually a misconception. Smaller guns do not mean "less kick". In fact, the opposite is true, especially when you're buying the "Airweight" models. And keep in mind they typically have longer/heavier trigger pulls.

Some of those little sub compact pistols have much more recoil than a full sized.

Yeah, and for some reason it's what most gun store owners push on women, saying it's light and small. Then they bring it to the range and hate it and end up never carrying it.

If I wanted a shotgun my 5'0" 105 lb wife could use, what would it be?

She has very little gun experience, but she's tougher than her size. I was thinking a youth gun, but would rather the 870.

You should try my .44 Special. It’s advertised at like 21 oz. I think but I’ve weighed it unloaded and it’s actually only 19 oz. My wife’s Ruger SP101 .38 weighs more.
