Imma crusty frick and have many great dogs in my 71yrs. Lost my 14yr old dauchand in winter of '21.
My current is a Cavalier King Charles, great 2.5yr old dog, full grown at 18lbs. Loving, great companion for me and my wife.
They're as active or docile as you want. Prolly best disposition of any dog we've owned....

My Black Lab, Maddie.. She was a retrieving machine. We would get back to the camp and she would fall asleep in my lap like a 65# lap dog.
Miss her dearly..

I had a Collie as a kid that was the best dog I've ever had.
Currently have a 3 yr old Dutch Sheperd that is making a solid run at #1.

Most of my dogs have been Jack Russells, so they get my vote. I love that they are smart, rough and tumble dogs that don't take up too much room. My daughter has a Heeler and she is a brilliant dog, but she is not a big fan of children or other dogs.

Catahoula's. They're loyal, smart, and protective. They can be high energy so make sure you have the time to give them the exercise they need, but they are great dogs.
I've had 2.

I may never get another dog, she was that good.
I never understood this. With all due respect to your amazing puppers. This would just only make me want more dogs. They all come with a different character and attributes we fall in love with. That is me any who.

Lab. Current version although I had another one that was second best. Have also had 2 which were pretty much duds. These were all hunting dogs and pets.
Young labs are a pain in the arse though. They are puppies until at least 18 months old. As pets. They can hunt fine at a younger age with typical young dog mistakes but the shite they will do around the house as pets is not for the faint of heart....after about 36 months they mostly sleep and hunt if they are hunting labs but from 6 weeks to 36 months they may eat everything in the house including doors, windows, small kids and animals. They are a pain in the arse until they aint. They also shed enough everyday to outfit a couple just like them.

Best dog hands down was a chihuahua, but he was special and I got lucky that he was just a cool dog and not a typical chihuahua. I'd never get another like him if I tried.
I miss him so much.
