Cote Blanche pontoon bridge. Cut Off, LA

My favorite.

I know it when I am almost home from a long day at work.

Unfortunately sometimes, it is open for boat traffic. Time to wait for it to close and open back for car traffic.

I remember when they refurbished the Cote Blanche bridge and the Galliano pontoon bridge several years ago. After it was done, there was some interesting debate at the local council meeting when one of the bridge tenders complained about the size of the bathroom on the bridge. She couldn’t fit inside of it.

The Shreveport-Barksdake bridge is cool when you drive towards Bossier and see Barksdale AFB straight ahead. there are also scenic parkways there on either side of the river.

That's the Red River bridge at Coushatta. Crossed it many a time.

The Official Bridge Of The OT. I use it all the time. It's what a bridge should be.

They actually made it for me- but I have no qualms about others using it.

That's not fair, it sees a couple hundred cars every single day.

Dipshit local legislators in Lake Charles area want assurances that the state will spend an unnecessary frickton on mimicking those goofy guardrails before supporting a replacement bridge. They probably also want a dangerously high grade, too.

That first pic must be a artist rendering because there hasn't been that much traffic on the Audubon bridge at one time. He'll I don't think that many cars has been on it since it opened.

I'm not sure that's true.

I do hope that they put a good looking bridge because it is kind of the front door to Lake Charles and the rest of Louisiana coming from Texas.

It would be a shame to have just a simple concrete span, like over the Sabine, especially since it would be replacing such a historic and iconic landmark. But, I can assure you, the grade will be much, much less, although the height of a new bridge is still somewhat of an ongoing dispute.

This goes back a ways....Anyone remember when the Huey P. Long Bridge in Baton Rouge ("The Old Bridge") had the original rails with the iron fleur-de-lis attached?

People used to stop and "borrow" them as souvenirs over the years until there were practically none left....

I've also been to the top in 2013. That stair climb to the top in the semi dark felt like forever. I had pictures on my work computer leaning up against that guide wire at the top, but I think they got archived somewhere or deleted.

I've got to say for as many river crossings as there are in this state, we've got a pretty pitiful collection of bridges. I could only come up with 6 bridges that were worth a mention in any list of "best" bridges. They are as follows in no particular order.

Westlake Bridge I-10 Bridge Lake Charles

Texas St Bridge, Shreveport

Mellville Pipeline Bridge

Luling Bridge

Audubon Bridge

Paris Rd. Bridge

There's nothing like the Estherwood bridge in Acadia parish floating away and disappearing from flooding. It's a one lane, pontoon draw bridge with a speed limit of 5 mph.
