Lots of nice places to live in LA city limits too. Bel Aire for example. Many others.

The actual city of Los Angeles is a terrifying concrete hellhole

this...traffic is an absolute nightmare 24/7, the cost of living is completely out of control and salaries are NOT keeping pace. On the bright side, we've had no rain in more than 90 days and the smog layer is growing by the day.

I'm looking to move out here after the first of the year.

This is a dumb misconception. I'm guessing you've never been to LA?

You guess incorrectly.

There are shitty parts of sure, but West LA is absolutely awesome. Many of the extremely nice areas you mention lie within city limits.

"City limits" is pretty much irrelevant in LA. The Pacific Palisades is technically in the LA city limits. Are you going to tell me that's big city living like Manhattan?

Me and the wife were close to moving to Seattle 2 years ago. Like really close. Her best friend lived there so she was down.

Then in a span of a week, her best friend all of a sudden moved back to LA and we found out my wife was pregnant.

No more Seattle

I'm no OT baller by any means but you can live a pretty comfortable life here in LA without having a lot of money.

Having lived in both SF and LA I can say with certainty that LA is better. SF is dirty, crowded, and absurdly expensive.

LA, as long as you're in the right area, is awesome.

I will have to consent though, San Diego is nicer. But it doesn't have the big city aspect that LA has.

I saw a nice 3/2 with good curb appeal for the bargain price of $1.5M...with $300K down your house note would only be $10K a month. Let me know if you're interested, I know the realtor

It depends a lot on age, income, interests, etc.

Seattle is a cool place to live, but the weather really is just that bad. Give me Chicago weather (where I live now) over Seattle weather (where I lived for three years) every day of the week and twice on Sunday. At least it gets hot and summery in Chicago.

I'd live in Chicago, NYC, and San Francisco and visit Phoenix, New Orleans, and Portland.

So sounds like you just don't like big cities. For me, SF is better than LA in every conceivable way... except for weather, which is admittedly a big deal.

Ouch. I would love to move out West somewhere, like Utah or Oregon. My wife wants a big city, and part of me does too. I just want more access to outdoor activities. I want to ride awesome trails, hike, rock climb, etc.

I want to live in a small city with easy access to a big city. I'd love to move back to the northeast probably in either Maine or Vermont. I love love love the cold and the snow. I really miss winter and how I would love to have a thunderstorm come rolling through.

DC should be high on both lists
DC is a fantastic city to live in.

NYC, in my opinion, is the best city in the country to visit, and if you can handle the pace and make decent money, it's an amazing place to live.

Seattle/Denver are incredible as well on both fronts. There is no prettier city in the country than Seattle in the summer. I understand the rain argument, but the place is incredible regardless of the frequently gray skies.

Honestly, if you have a real professional job that enables you to live a nice lifestyle in some of the big Western cities, it's kind of hard to find the time for that sort of stuff regularly. It's a possibility in Denver, Salt Lake City, and to a lesser extent, Portland, but for the rest of the major Western cities (Seattle, SF, LA, etc), it's a PITA to balance a successful professional life with the excellent local outdoor opportunities.
