"Begin recording" as a first instinct

News stories about the Dayton and El Paso shootings featured phone videos shot be people involved in the incident. This is not unusual as most traumatic (or even quasi traumatic) events are recorded by someone whose first instinct was to pull out their phone and begin recording.
Wouldn't your first instinct be to get to safety instead of trying to capture the event on video?
