Again, beard policies are antiquated and pointless but if you budge on one rule it sets a precedent that valedictorians are above the school's rules.

Or the school could use the opportunity to adjust its clearly antiquated rules.

I had uniforms in HS, polos and school-color specific khakis. No big jewelry, wild hair colors, etc. But that was relaxed for our graduation ceremony.

Nope.

Because he didn't choose to follow simple rules that were required to participate in the ceremony.

It isn't like this was an unsolvable problem. He basically chose not to walk.

This idea that how we feel about something is the most important thing in the world is a disease.
In many situations, to be the most successful and productive you can be, you must do things that you do not feel like doing or that you think are stupid. Being able to do things that you don't feel like doing, and do them well, is an extremely important ability to have. It is, arguably, one of the most important lessons that elementary and secondary education can impart.

We couldn't walk at graduation if we didn't wear pants and nice shoes, and the girls couldn't walk if they didn't have on a dress and nice shoes. Of course some stupid hippie girl tried to fight it, work some clunker Birkenstock type thing, and the administration pulled her out of the line. Made a big stink about it. Oh well, we'll mail you your diploma. And this was in Alabama 17 years ago. Some people just don't understand that certain ceremonies should be respected and a certain uniformity is required. You can have your personal style on your personal time. Cap and gown and decent clothes/hairstyles.

What in the frick?

I was valedictorian (or one of the 6 at least) of my class. However, I chose to graduate at midterm of my senior year, and thus, per policy, was unable to walk at graduation with my classmates. It sucked, but I am not a whiny little bitch and it has never affected my life since then to not be able to walk the stage or give that speech. Then again, I am white, hetero, male, and educated, so I did not have state reps/pastors rushing to my defense over a BS rule (which by the way, they changed the year after I graduated).

So the kid requested that state representatives give him a graduation ceremony or did they think what was done to him was wrong and offer one to him?

As long it wan't a full blown safari on your face where it was too damn distracting, my high school allowed beards with no problem at all and nobody really cared whether it be students, teachers, or administration. I had a beard back then and did have a beard for graduation.

Amite isn't the military, they're a civilian high school that needs to lighten the frick up.

I honestly don't see where a well-kept beard goes against that. Which makes it terribly antiquated. Especially for someone graduating high school and not at a military academy/prep school.

Does that mean I support all the bullshite that followed in allowing him his own ceremony? Nope. As said, it's unfortunate he didn't get to walk but it is what it is. But if a Harvard grad can walk across a stage with a beard, I really don't see where Amite High should be above that.

Rules, laws, blah blah blah

Who needs any of that when every person is the center of the universe?

Then get the rule changed!

Don't continually erode the very idea of rules and laws.

You can either agree or disagree with the rule, it was still the rule. As such, it should be uniformly applied, or the administration will reek of biased application of policy.

He had 4 years to petition to get the rule changed for his pending graduation. he had a the opportunity to shave the beard and walk the stage. He chose not to do so.

So in response we get a black state rep and a black preacher to lift up the black petulant attention seeking child. He should be ashamed of his black privilege.

A lot of jobs require you to look clean shaven. It may not be a written rule. Maybe why many cannot get and keep good work. With that said, High School is a good place to teach these things since most don't learn them from home.

Yes, that may be the case. I can certainly see why someone would feel that way. That said, it is CURRENTLY the rule.

Should we only be required to follow rules with which we are in agreement? In that case, why do we need rules at all?

Yeah, just like Mizzou and Seattle University. Let's allow a narcissistic minority say how we'll dress.

This guy said "the teachers was saying". This guy is immediately going to be immediately thrown out the door anytime he interviews for a position. He went to a piece of shite school that I'm sure most of this board could have been the valedictorian.

Would be hysterical if he showed up clean shaven.
