re: Be honest: How is the LSU MBA program perceived? Is now the right time/place to do it?

I'm glad to read different points of view. I have the same concerns myself . Edit to say yes I'm 100% open to moving

I should have also noted that the business world often works around business hours that would give me the lifestyle I want, which is enough time to raise a family and enjoy life. Many doctors, although paid handsomely, do not have a consistent schedule or time for their families. I would like to work sooner rather than get my first paycheck in residency when I'm nearly 30
Friend knew exactly what she wanted to be. A Dermatologist. When I asked why she said "no one calls you in the middle of the night for a rash or zit."
No call, 5 days a week.

I feel like you would be better served getting an MPH or healthcare admin degree.
What about grad school for biomedical research or biomedical engineering?

I know some companies pay for mbas but that's not a guarantee, and there are arguments that going back to school is difficult once you work

Not to be harsh, but if they're offering this "opportunity" to someone with no work experience and a low GMAT, do you think it's that good of an opportunity?
ETA: An MBA isn't a free ticket to a quality job like it may have been 20-30 years ago. I've got friends who went through top 10 MBA programs in the last 2 years and still ended up struggling to find a role in the field they wanted to enter.
I would suggest going into industry and trying to make it without the MBA for now. Worst case scenario, you hate it and go back to school in a year or two. At least you have some work experience prior to the MBA which will go much further upon graduation.

top ten program or something.
He could apply there, or on the off ´on the cusp´ programs. I´d imagine he´d get bites.

I work in Ag Econ Research. I started law school at UVA and was on the verge of a nervous breakdown two weeks in. I know I could probably have a big law job paying 4 times what I earn now had I gone through with it, but I know I wouldn't be happy and I was worried I was going to go past the point of no return while dealing with a lot of anxiety issues.
No shame in that at all.

Go to PA school bro. Best decision I've ever made in my life. Well that and accepting the job I've had for a long time now.

Did you miss the low GMAT score?

Med school would be 100% on me financially. I'd be in debt for a mortgage on student loans. On top of that it's extremely hard and I worry I can get through it without fatigue

Don't feel any now, but I did for a long time. It was brutally tough on my ego. My self worth crashed. I felt like a failure.
But everything worked out in the end. Once I stopped giving a shite what random people thought and lived for myself, life got easier.

I´m sure it´s perceived well in Louisiana.
Posted on 4/12/17 at 9:56 pm to schwartzy
I can't speak to how it's viewed in LA but I can tell you it would basically be worthless in NYC unless a LSU grad just happened to be the one hiring.

The business degree market is completely saturated... and this is coming from a guy getting his MBA ATM. If I could be a Dr, I would have. I don't have the drive to study that hard. You will make more money, which will allow you to live a great life.

Did you take the MCAT? Just bc you have a high biology degree GPA doesn't automatically get you into medical school.

Go to PA school
I have legitimately thought about it. If you don't mind me asking, did you owe a lot in loans? It's more expensive than other grad programs.
I did not take the MCAT. I know the test is pretty grueling. I don't usually do well on those tests, so I'd have to assume I'd get an average score.

I didn't carry any debt into PA school, but left with about 25K-30K maybe? It's been so long I don't remember the exact figure. I've been out for 9 years or so. Not that much all things considered.

Zero chance at a top ten program without work experience.
He needs to go work for a few years.
